....and let's not ever forget someone who I knew, grew up with, and to this day mourn her demise equally as I do my first wife....Laura Nyro.

Easy. Greg Allman.
I'm reading the autobio of Bill Graham right now. He talked about Gregg Allman's athenticity as a blues singer and said that, and I paraphrase, "Greg Allman didn't sing black. He just grew up poor around the same places black people did. If he sung like Donnie Osmond then he wouldn't be authentic."
BTW. That Bill Graham book just has me rolling with laughter during all the rock star prima donna anecdotes.

Billie Holiday.

Hands down the best blues voice, ever.

Great choice. Times sure have changed. We have a CD of hers with "Gloomy Sunday" on it. The song was apparently taken off the market or something because it was so sad people across the country were committing suicide listening to it. It sounds pretty tame today, though I haven't heard it in a while. I'll go check if all this might be an urban myth.
