A little help identifying please

A very good friend of mine has acquired this revolver from his grandfather which he had when he was a sheriff. He would like to know a little history on it, as would I. Any information would great. It is a 38.

Looks like a Chiefs Special. I can't see the inside of the yoke, but it could say either M36 or M37. The latter is the Airweight version. The serial number is on the bottom of the butt. Tell us that number, with any letters, and we can tell you the year it was made. You can xx out the last few numbers to keep it private if you want.
