That should be a fun Trapper Model to shoot. I have one in .44 magnum and .357 magnum but .45 Colt would be fun also........

This one is in great shape, there's not a mark on the loading gate so I wonder if it was even shot. And Yup, it's the Trapper model with the 16"ish barrel.

I have a couple Rugers that shoot the same cartridge, a Blackhawk convertible and a Redhawk, but no Smith. I'm thinkin I need a 25-7, or maybe one of the pre-lock Mountain Guns.

I think the peep sight option will help with these old eyes. I just can't see putting optics on the gun, it's so light and handy the way it is.

I looked at some of the auction sites, I came out ahead on this one! I'm very much looking forward to range day with it, and will report back (don't expect me to post my targets though!:D).

I looked at the Skinner sights. I think that's the way to go!

That's a nice clean looking Winchester. You can use to guard the stagecoach runs to Pintos. ;)

May I suggest a Williams FP? I can't tell from your picture but I'd be surprised if it wasn't factory drilled and tapped for one. Getting the aperture back close to your eye helps a lot.

Very nice. Is your an angle eject? I had a .44 mag version and it really was a very handy little rifle. In .45 Colt it should make a neat house gun.

Nice gun! I have 2 Trappers, one in .45LC and the other in .30-30. The front sight on the .45 is brazed on, not dovetailed in place, so it can't be drifted sideways. Yours is a later model than mine, so this may be different.

I suggest removing the saddle ring. It serves little purpose except to rattle back and forth, scratching the finish on the receiver.

Yup, it's an angle eject. I did a function check, not a full range visit, and it operates perfectly so it is now sitting bedside with 9 rounds of lead cowboy ammo in it. If I need to use a long gun for home defense I figure that the .45 loads would do less collateral damage than 00 Buck. The gun is shorter, lighter, and easier to maneuver than my 870.

It has the sliding tang safety amd rebounding hammer. I like it much better than the hammer block. I think the previous owner did something to the saddle ring as I can't get it to budge. Since it ain't rattling I'm going to leave it as is. I really like the gun! Oh, and the front sight is doveetailed, another advantage of the later ones I think!

My early/mid90s Trapper had the sliding hammer block... after 80-90 years.... adding it seemed something driven more by the Lawyers than any practical need..... a local gunsmith offered to remove it and added plugs..ala "the plug" for newer Smiths........much cleaner lines.

Exactly my thinking regarding the shotgun vs trapper. ;) My Winchester didn't have angle eject and didn't have a safety either. I stoked mine with Black Talons. Overkill actually. That's one gun I really regret selling... :(
