A mess of fried squirrel for dinner

I can attest to what you said about the Weaver K4. Back in the 1950s
I had a Winchester model 70 30:06 with a Weaver K4 on it. Lived in
SW Montana at that time and the hunting was great. I took deer, elk,
antelope, and bear with it. Can honestly say I don't remember ever
missing with that set up.
PS I never ate a squirrel but I enjoyed your story.

Man what a great and well written story . I like hunting squirrel nearly as much as quail . A good dog and a 22 rifle makes for a very enjoyable day in the woods. Plus some dang good eating .On the subject of deer though I have definitely seem more deer while hunting small game than ever while hunting for deer .They seem to have ESP or something .Nice rifle set up there also ,I love the old Remington and other classics but there is something to be said for the newer set ups also and yours is a real eye catcher .

My dad used to like to go squirrel hunting back when I was young some 40+ years ago. Sometimes he used his shotgun but most times he took his single shot .22 with iron sights. He usually got some either way and he knew how to fry them up with some kind of batter so they were quite good. It was nice not worrying about bb's when he used the .22.

One of the fond memories from childhood and squirrel hunting and eatin' was my grand father. He came from the generation where hunting was addition food and not so much for fun, fishing was the same. You did not waste anything edible so he always insisted on the head being cooked and all us grand kids grew up watching and imitating that. Gnawing on the skull and cheeks, eating the tongue and cracking the head open and eating the brain.

I squirrel hunted often when I was a teenager. My squirrel dog Tipper and I used to limit out on a regular basis. My grandmother used to complain because I ruined so many squirrels by shooting them in the head, she was a big fan of using squirrel brains as added ingredients in fried eggs or navy beans or gumbo or chicken & dumplings. Personally, I never was a fan but I gotta admit my grandmother was an awesome cook and I never would ask if a particular dish had squirrel brains in it or not . . . frankly I just didn't want to know.

What I consider as fun is that my mom and my aunt even though growing up on a farm never learned to cook from my granny, their mother, like many may expect on a small farm. Granny would not let them get loose and make a mess in her kitchen that she would have to clean up but she did teach me about frying, baking and such. It is why I get many of those cooking up supper chores here now. SWMBO takes care of the Mexican and Cajun fixings since that is her background. Fried chicken, chicken fried steak or pork chops and home made cornbread and biscuits and rolls. Learned all of those at the hands of her we were always close with a connection there. My brother was alway close and best friends and had a mentor with our granddad, called Pa like on the Andy Griffith Show, brother Kevin learned most things mechanical and how to fix most things. It works out fine, if I need repairs that he can handle he takes care of it and the trade is that they get invited regularly here for some good vittles(yes I DO use that term) for supper at times. :)
