I just got my new 9mm M&P compact from my FFL. In getting it home I noticed small scratches on the top and sides of the slide by the ejector hole. I tried some Mothers and it doesn't touch them. And not wanting to send it off to S&W factory since I just got it and haven't even shot it yet, I am looking for some ideas to get these out. They aren't very deep but I would like to get them out. Any information would be appreciated. I also wonder if S&W would send out a new slide assembly with out having to send the whole gun to them if I returned the defective one? Thanks

I know you probably don't want to send it in, but if you want S&W to take care of it that will be your best bet. They had a few slide finish issues early on. They might have you send slide by itself, you'll just have to give them a call.

Dang Craig, That after your 10 day waiting period to get it after it arrived in Sunny Cal. I would be lighting up the phone lines to S&W.:( Wishing ya luck on your hopefully speedy outcome.

OK,
I know it's "brand new". And no one likes seeing the first scratch or dent in a new car? Especially not even having been test driven yet! However, I'd take a date/time stamp digital picture of it then head to the range. How would you feel if after 3-4 weeks gone while they threw a new finish on it for you, and when you took it out for the shakedown cruise after, it wouldn't even feed FMJ's? I'm not saying you should be pleased with the scratch from rough handling or bouncing a magazine off of it. But unless this is a pistol you planned on keeping ANIB in a safe, that slight blemish means little. For if your going to well and truly carry it, it'll look like Hell in 4-6 months anyway! FWIW, I posted 2 weeks ago about actually being happy that my 10 month old M&P9c had lost the finish at all of the slide and sight 90's. Because now it looked like a "real" carry gun. As in, one that had really been "carried".

Here is how I cured scratches on mine. Let me state that I do not carry it and now I don't have to worry about scratches. It is strictly a shooter and truck gun.

Sent it off this Morning to S&W to get slide replaced or repaired!

Sent the gun off to the factory this morning via FedEx. To have it looked at and repaired. I tried with Flitz and Mothers to get them out but all I got was a pretty shiny "scratched" slide. So the best thing I thought was to have them replace it or ??? I think they could probably refinish it but maybe they will just put a good one on to expedite the repair. Thanks for all your replies.

S&W Called and they Replaced the Slide and Said it is Being Shipped back!!

The factory called and said they replaced the slide, and it would be going to the shipping department and I should have it by Wednesday next week at the latest. They also wanted me to know not to polish the Melonite Finish on the slide just use breakfree or M-Pro7. I explained I was just trying to get the scratches to lighten and he said if anything ever happens like this in the future just send it in and they will take care of the problem. And they wanted to make sure that I would not try to polish the replaced one as the Melonite is a special finish and he wanted to make sure I was aware of that. I must say that the service and the turn around time was great. They were informative and asked if I had any questions and the call to make sure I would be cleaning it with the right stuff and letting me know that he had it in his hand and it looks great, I think is pretty good service. I am 2 for 2 as when I sent in my .460XVR to the they had it 13 total days including weekends and this 9mm they only had it 12 days. This time frame includes shipping and return and weekends. I think that is pretty good and once again they have done a great job.

Great news Craig, now hopefully you'll get to go send some rounds down range with her next week.:) I'm sure you'll like it, I really like mine:D
