Been cleaning out the safe and now down to only three riot guns
These are the keepers after letting the Winchester Model 12, Stevens 620, High Standard 18-7 and Remington Wingmaster roam to other pastures

For those who care about such things:

1) As far as I can tell, the Winchester 97 is how it left the factory.

2) The Remington 31 is how it left the factory except that I sanded and refinished all the wood with Danish Oil due to the fact that when I got the gun 1/3 of the finish had flaked off the stock.

3) The Ithaca 37 is significantly modified. The finish on the metal and the pump handle is original. The barrel was cut to 18.5 inches and a high tech tactical brass bead was added. The stock was found online. After I had the stock shortened and professionally fitted with a reproduction recoil pad I refinished it with Truoil.

The 97 hearkens from before 1900 and was a fearsome weapon in the trenches of WWI. The Ithaca is a bit of a novelty because it was meant to be a bird gun. The Remington 31 is a special type of awesome. IMHO the 31 is the finest wood and steel pump riot gun ever made.

Sir, that's mean... I have a serious addiction to shotguns and this post certainly did not help. :( :(

Now, seriously, what beautiful firearms. I absolutely love the Ithaca 37.

Congratulations and if you'd like to post more pictures of those beauties I definitely don't mind looking at them (repeatedly).

Lovely examples of wood and steel. Thanks for the pix.
And, apparently, the riot guns were effective in keeping your environs free of rioters.

I have three riot guns and there have been no riots within three miles of my house since the late 1960's.

The riot gun I most recently sold was from the late 1960's and the most recent riots near my home were in the late 1960's.

It doesn't take a genius IQ or a Ph.D. in statistics to spot the obvious multivariate correlation over five decades and it is quite aggravating that I am forced to explain exceedingly simple stuff to what I heretofore thought an intelligent and sophisticated Forum.

i am down to two....18 1/2" cerakoted Mossberg 500A w/tritium bead and laser sight and my Ithaca 37 12 gauge w/cut down VR barrel and tritium bead installed. I STILL think that a short barreled pumpgun is the best home defense weapon for the average person......Mike

Tritium sight makes good sense when something goes bump in the night

Nice Riot guns Bushmaster.

Here are mine L to R: Win '97, Win 12, Remington 11, Scattergun Tech SBS, Federal Labs 37 mm gas gun.

The two Winchesters and the gas gun were all owned by the Illinois State Police. All three are similarly marked:

I really want an Ithaca 37. Passed one with a bulged barrel at a gun show for $150, went back later and it was gone. I would have cut it to 18.5"

I have 3 myself, Win 12- Win 97- Brn A5. None of them are factory riot
guns. They were all rescued from damaged barrels. The 97 after cut, had
screw in chokes installed. The Rem 31, is a good shotgun. I had a running
argument with my gunsmith for years over W-12 vs Rem 31. He said the
Rem 31 was the best pump ever built. A little trivia on the 31. It is the
only shotgun I have ever owned that you could mount a scope on with
out D/T for bases. You can use 22 rings right on the raised undercut sight
plane on top of reciever. In my quest for the perfect slug gun I had a R31
with poly choke that I cut to 18 1/2", put Redfield all steel 22 rings and K4
scope. Gun shot like a rifle at 60 yds. Still I kept the W12 and sold the R31
I like the Ith 37 & R10 too, but they can be finicky with hand loads.

I have got to have a '97 now.

If you have the cash I would try to get a factory riot 97 in good condition for about $900 if you can find one. At this price lever you want it to be factory original.

Then you can enjoy it for a while and you should be able to sell it for about the same if you don't want to keep it.

If you do not plan on selling for a good long while, buy any one you can find, chop the barrel to about 20", rebead and enjoy!
