I own a 1967 Sears Super 12 garden tractor that once belonged to my dad. He stopped using it thirty years ago. Dad drained the tank but failed to drain the gasoline from the carburetor. That old gasoline crystallized and fastened itself to every part inside the unit. The carb was trashed and unfortunately that model has not been manufactured for decades.

I dissembled the carb and soaked everything in Berryman B-12 for a week. I was able to scrape and chisel off a lot of the gunk each day that covered the large areas but wasn’t able to get into the small crevices and passages.

I have an ultrasonic brass cleaner so I figured what can it hurt. The carb vibrated in B-12 for an hour and all kinds of sludge came out, but everything brass was left dull. Vinegar makes my shooting brass bright so why not. After vibrating in the vinegar the brass fittings looked bright and shiny.

Today I cut new gaskets, reassembled the carb and bolted it up. The old Super 12 cranked and after a little carb adjustment, ran perfectly.

Now I’m wondering what other uses there are for that ultrasonic cleaner besides shooting brass.

Glad to see you got the old boy running again!

I have a 1967 Sears Custom 6 that is very, very similar to your Dad's Super 12.
I have been using it continuously for the last 25 years (with occasional repairs) and it was used regularly in the 24 previous.

Happy 50th Birthday (next year) to all the 1967 Sears garden tractors still taking care of America!

John
