I've been looking for a Smith & Wesson M57 for a while now but the prices have been nuts. Then I lucked into one on GB. It's a 4" S prefix gun in extremely clean condition and dates to about 1968. One little mark in the blueing. It shows very light wear and good care. It suffered from ugly grip syndrome. It now is wearing a set of Ahrends but may soon sport ivories.

Then, inspired by a couple of threads on this forum, I picked up a M58 at a reasonable price. It has some holster wear in the blueing at the muzzle and the front edge of the cylinder. It's very clean and came wearing a pair of Trooper grips that I really like. This too is an S prefix gun. This one dates to 1964 or 1965. I'm feeling pretty good about these two. The surprise for me is that at this point I think I like the 58 better than the 57.

I think the reason the 58 appeals to me so much is that it is a relatively simple and workmanlike gun. The 57 ain't no slouch but.....

The fixed sight guns are just a superb configuration. I have several K's. No L or N. I"ll have to assume that the "in hand" feel of that 58 is just as sweet. The 58 is next on my list.
Nice pair.

I like the fixed sight revolvers as well; they look simpler and more rugged.

Nice pair.

The in-hand feel of the 58 is really, really sweet. The 57 is excellent and it is a completely different gun. I think I expected more similarity. None of my musings should be construed as disappointment with the 57. Taint so.

I had a partner early in my law enforcement career that carried a Model 57-4 inch. He was a great shot and loved his revolver. Shortly before he died, i bought it from him. They are a handful, but a lot of fun to shoot. I also like the 58, and enjoy shooting them. Does kinda remind me of a model 10 on steroids!

Shoot??!!

The question is; How do they shoot?

Hah! I knew someone would ask this question. :D. I haven't gotten to the range yet! The fake Herrett target grips that came on the 57 were so poorly designed as to be unshootsble. Got the Ahrends on it this week. They feel good. Probably get out a week from tomorrow. My Blackhawk 41 is a serious shooter and I'm hoping these two will run with it.

...and hopefully in a couple of months I can visit with you so we can have a .41 fest in WVA...!

Nice way to start a .41 Collection...Bob

41 mag is certainly an excellent caliber...and one that demands to be reloaded for if you shoot much...great finds!

Wow! that two of a kind will beat most any other hand....Welcome to the cult ;)

Thank you. It's good to be here. With a couple of pleasant exceptions, I've been over on the 1911 side of the universe until recently. The revolvers are proving to be a lot of fun and the variety/variations of S&W guns is almost bewildering.

Gotta clear out some time for a little range work. Between day job, music, and our granddaughter I'm getting squeezed. The Poopette take first place, of course. I'll have a fishing pole and set of pink hearing protectors for her just as soon as she'll fit the small sizes of each.;)

I too have both 57 & 58 & 657 and by far I prefer the 58!!!
Nothing wrong with the others, I just love that 58!!!
By the way I feel the same about my M-65.
