a part in cleaning kit question

was wondering was given a new cleaning kit with my new gun and was wondering , it came with a part listed as spear pointed jag. what is that used for? it has the normal brush, wool mop and patch loop

Its for the patch to run through your barrel. It pierces the patch after you have it on the rod. It gives better contact to the barrel walls than the old slotted type.

Remember that patches that work with the loop jag, may be too tight on the spear point, so they may need to be trimmed down in size to work properly. The spear point jag does do better work because of the tighter fit. It should be pushed on through from the rear to the front whenever possible, then let the dirty patch fall off in the trash can. You don't want to drag old fowling and lead back through the bore.
