My thought is thus: we on this site should take a moment to post a picture with a serial # prefix to discern what pattern S&W has with their pistols.
I came up with this idea because I noticed my 5903 with a TES prefix has a lot in common with the other poster's topic on his 5906 ,which has the same features as my own gun. Perhaps there really is an order to how the serial numbers and features progress and we just haven't collected enough info to determine it. Perhaps the "missing links" are because S&W considered the entire lineup as one long model type instead of individual firearms with their own treatment, as it were.
If it turns out im dead wrong,no worries as we still get to see some cool 3rd gen gun porn.
Ill start off with my own example-a S&W 5903, TESXXXX , factory ship date of June 1990.
