My manuals are a little sketchy on No.9. I have some 240 cast SWCs. I was looking for something around 1,000fps from a 4 inch M29/629.
( Just found a pound of No.9 in THE CLOSET, guess my bride will be happy I took something out of it....) ;) Thanks for your help-dan

You're going to find that AA9 isn't a suitable propellant for what you want to do with it. Try a faster powder such as Unique or W231. Accurate Arms does not list a starting charge for velocity that low with 240 grain bullets and that propellant.

;)

Thanks. I'm running low on Unique and 2400 which is what I always use. I need to load 500 and don't think my 2400 will stretch that far.

All HIS best-dan

Dan, do yourself a favor and don't load 500 rounds of reduced velocity rounds with AA#9.

Don't get me wrong, I have some really good loads with a 240gr+ LRNFPHP that run 1800fps from a Marlin 1894 with AA#9. Great for lead and full magnum loads. Stuck a bullet once with a reduced load though, don't think you want 500 of those kinds of loads sitting around!

There are some really good powders out there to do that with. Unique is a great powder for this, somewhere in the 8-10gr range I would guess.

Be safe, I am looking for His coming too! Praise God!

In my Lyman book, I Found

Loads for 17.5 to 21.7 gns, 750 - 1223 fps(34,600 CUP) for a 245 cast. I know pressures aren't linear but it appears to me that ~19.8gs. would produce about 1,000fps.....????

I trust the Lyman book, the load is listed in vol.1 and vol.2.
Txs-dan

I can tell you this first hand, do not go to the 17.5gr level unless you like to pull bullets. I know, fortunately, I didn't have many made. ;)

I respectfully suggest you spend the money and go buy a can of one of the following:

Hodgdon HP-38, Winchester 231, Alliant Unique, Hodgdon Universal, Alliant Power Pistol, VihtaVuori N330, Alliant Herco, VihtaVuori N340, IMR, Co Hi-Skor 800-X, IMR, Co SR 4756, Ramshot True Blue, Accurate Arms No. 5, Hodgdon HS-6, Winchester AutoComp, Ramshot Silhouette, VihtaVuori 3N37, VihtaVuori N350, VihtaVuori 3N38, Alliant Blue Dot, Accurate Arms No. 7

Any of these powders will be capable of providing safe pressures for a .44 caliber 240 grain bullet at 1,000 fps. And they will burn clean and not give erratic responses that some magnum type powders will do when you try to load them down.

I have been using most of these in loading the same type of load you desire.

ALL of these powders are capable of good, or bad accuracy just depending on how your shoots them.

Good luck!

OK ! ! !

I give, maybe I can trade it and get it out of here!
Thanks,Folks and have aBlessed Sunday- Dan

FWIW, my magnums are W296/H110 or 2400, my moderate loads are Unique and my light loads are W231/HP38.

Each powder is right for the pressure and velocity of the job it is called on, and each is inferior when asked to do the task of the other.

In a magnum case, use 7g W231 under a 250g cast SWC and tell me if you don't think it's a dandy. In a 4" revolver you should get somewhere @ 900fps and if you want to go higher, try another half grain or so. Clean and efficient w/o undue pressure.

I too was running low on 2400 and decided to try AA9. I found load data to be hard to find and some times hard to believe. I have read that they have chenged the formula a couple of times and that older loading data may be too hot.

I have no actual knowledge of the formula but I can tell you for sure that some of the .357 Mag. data in the manuals published a few years back are WAY too hot. I Shook the forend and the scope mount off my Thompson Contender with one of those loads.

If you try it, go straight to their website and download the current recommendations.

W231/HP-38 will get you where you want to be and even more. A 240gr lead bullet @1000 fps is easily done with a powder in the burn rate range of W231 and it will feel like a light load too. HS-6 is probably the slowest powder I would use for your stated intent.

Check the load data section for ideas - there are lots and lots of powders that will move a 240gr pill @1000fps from a 4" barrel.

I have been moving to Hodgdon Universal as a cleaner burning
substitute for Unique. Their website lists (for a 240 SWC) 6.5
grains for 850 FPS going up to 10 grains for 1275 FPS. A little
linear regression (which you can do here: Simple Linear Regression - Free Statistics and Forecasting Software (Calculators) v.1.1.23-r7),
shows 7.75 grains will be right around 1000 FPS. This jibes
well with the old Skeeter recipe which uses 7.5 grains of Unique.

BTW a nice way to safely get rid of old powder is to spread it
as thinly and over as wide an area as you can on your yard or
garden. I have been known to just mix it in with my normal
fertilizer then spread it with the machine.

That old wives tale of using smokeless powder for fertilizer gets old. It doesn't work. It is just a fable.

Yer kidding... right?

Gunpowder is the world's BEST fertilizer. I use it with great results.

To the original poster: If you're close to North Charleston I could arrange to have the AA9 taken off your hands for $15 if you think that's fair.

My wife's family lives there and they could just hold it until we see each other again.

I've never used 9 but like experimenting.

Total BS. I don't know why people think smokeless gunpowder is so unstable that it will magically release nitrogen into the soil.

I believed that fable too once. I've sprinkled stick, ball and flake powders on the lawn with zero effect. I have more fun pouring it into a pile a lighting it up :)

I don't have an answer for your unbelievable lack of results.

Works for me and I know what I'm looking at.

You had no results, I have had excellent results - go figure.
