robbt, one of the Adam-12 revolvers was listed on GunBroker not too long ago. I believe it went unsold but you may be able to find the archived auction listing featuring many photo views of the gun's Farrant grips.

Here's another photo of Malloy's gun:

Adam-12 TV show used a variety of revolvers and holsters.

The first 2 years they both carried 6 inch S&W's.

Then they changed to 4 inch S&W's. Then from regular holsters to clam-shell's.

Whatever the folks in charge wanted - they got.

I have been watching the program on Netflix lately and it is amazing how little gun play they had on the show.

hi Guys , after the first dozen episodes the Adam-12 teams model 14 have what appears to be Farrant grips?
they just started rerunning in Ny
cannot see a good picture on the screen of the grips

The revolver in my post above is claimed to have been used by Martin Milner in the TV show. However, in all the episodes I have seen, Malloy's Model 15 has an early "fish-hook" hammer. The pistol offered for sale does not.

While the Model 15 offered up for sale, undoubtedly belonged to Mr. Milner and has been fitted with Farrant stocks, I doubt it was ever used on the show. When I examined the S&W in question it was in NIB condition and both the Farrant and S&W magna stocks were unblemished.

I can't imagine any prop man allowing an actor to bring his own gun to work, or any actor leaving his personal handgun with the Prop Department. The liability both ways would be ridiculous - and yes they had "liability" even in the 1960's and 70's.

Even John Wayne - whose prop guns had a very particular "look" depended on prop houses to supply the guns he used on camera. That's why every time you turn around there is a picture of some happy fellow mooning over a doggy yellow handled Colt that was "used" by "The Duke".

Shortly before his death, I heard Rick Jason claim in a radio interview that he had the M1 Carbine he had used in the Combat TV series. I don't know that it's true, but he said it.

I agree about observing the fish hook hammer. If the pictured Combat Masterpiece was used in Adam 12, there was at least one other.

The wood grain on the Farrants in the auction pictures certainly match screen shots of the grips going back to the first season with the K-38.

I recall some of the auction photos were still shots showing the grain of the grips on the TV show matching the grips on the auction gun.

We should allow for the possibility that Martin Milner did acquire the revolver he used on the show. And, we should allow for the possibility that S&W refurbished it, either as a favor or for a fee.

There are plenty of examples of S&W doing that for a retiring officer who perhaps was the department armorer who took care of department-owned S&W revolvers, etc. I personally know of one such refurbishing done by S&W and the revolver, although made in 1952, looks like it left the factory yesterday. The retired armorer in question said that after he received the gift, he never fired the revolver again, his department having switched to a newer model S&W.

Thus, I think without knowing the serial number and the history (Mr. Milner is still alive), it is a bit early to jump to conclusions about the authenticity of this revolver.

The other side of the grip is smooth without checkering:

I am next to certain that this photo does NOT show the Model 15 or Combat Masterpiece, but the 6 inch K38 or Model 14. Although you cannot see the full length of the barrel in this photo, there are other clues.

First, the original revolvers were 6 inch K38s or Model 14s carried in standard swivel holsters on the standard Sam Browne Belt with matching ammo case, etc. The hardware on the belt included the standard Sam Browne Belt buckle in nickel and the accessories had visible nickel snaps. The picture shows visible buckle, snaps and it is possible to clearly see the folded over holster body. The clamshell type would have been open as the weapon is out.

When Malloy and Reed changed to the 4 inch CM or Model 15, their leather gear also changed. Please recall that when using the 4 inch revolvers, the holster was the "clamshell" type swivel holster with the buckleless velcro type gun belt with the various pouches, etc., having velcro closures instead of visible snaps.

I realize the post in question was discussing the grips, but it is possible that the grips changed when the revolver changed on the show. I mention this simply because the grips in the photo look worn more than the ones in the auction revolver. On the other hand, Fuzzy was still working then, and new ones could have been obtained when the revolver model used changed, and perhaps when Milner acquired the revolver at the end of the TV series.

Although this buckleless system with hidden hardware was a Safariland product, LAPD bought theirs on contract from JAT Tribal Industries.

Look familiar?

hi guys , can pictures be posted of the " fish-hook" hammer and non fish-hook" hammer ???

many thanks, robbt

The JAT holster ad comes from me. Despite the claim in the ad, I've never found anyone who knows anything about JAT being used by LAPD. In the auction photos, Martin Milner's belt was stamped Safariland and the clam shell was stamped Safety Speed.

The grip picture is my screen shot and I'll confirm that it was from season one with a 6 inch K-38 and traditional Sam Brown leather that was probably also Safety Speed. The wood color shows up light because I had to push the brightness and contrast to bring out the rest of the picture. I'm sure the grips are the same as the auction grips.

I had also seen this (the pictures and video located at the site did not seem to copy into this post):

ADAM-12 Equipment |

"The Most Popular Holster with ADAM-12 Fans

The most popular and asked about “CLAMSHELL” holster was introduced to the Los Angeles Police Department in the 1960’s but didn’t become regularly used until the early 1970’s. This holster was seen regularly in the 1950’s police series, ‘Highway Patrol’ Starring Broderick Crawford. Originally designed for safety, a leather-covered “button” behind the trigger guard released a simple catch on the front edge of the holster. A wound spring forced the holster open and it hinged on the rear edge.

(L-R) William Boyett, Leonard Nemoy and Broderick Crawford in a 1950’s episode of the TV series ‘HIGHWAY PATROL.’ Boyett had already experienced the difficulty with the clamshell holster before A-12 and can be seen putting his gun in his waistband because he found it problematic to re-holster his weapon. When ADAM-12 switched to using the clamshell holster, Boyett is never seen re-holstering his gun.

Easy enough to open, Gary Crosby (Officer Ed Wells) also had difficulty with the clamshell holster and after many takes would end up just using both hands to grab the holster, center it and replace the gun and shut the holster.

Although a fan favorite and a cool looking holster, the actors (and some real police officers) did not care for the clamshell holster at all and many were happy to see it disappear.

JAT Industries supplied LAPD and Adam-12 with gear in 1971: Pictured above is the Velcro, Bruce Browne Buckleless Duty Belt with Clamshell holster, extra ammo pouches for quick loaders, handcuffs, case, LAPD baton and an Airsoft HG-131B Revolver Gas Pistol – another excellent prop in place of an S&W K-15 “Combat Masterpiece” revolver.

Pictured below is the exact rig used by LAPD officers and Malloy and Reed on Adam-12 supplied by JAT Industries. Other companies also supplied similar rigs to the Los Angeles Police Department.
