In a previous Post I talked about trying to pry loose a 686-3 3" CS-1 from my son's boss (gun store owner and hoarder!)...no luck so far. While waiting to get my hands on that CS-1, I went shopping around for a another 686 with 3" bbl. I watched this one on GB and when it didn't get any bids and the auction closed, I contacted the seller. We dickered for a while, and since it was within driving distance for me, we finally agreed on a cash price and pick up at his shop. I think I did OK on this one...asking price was $999, and I was able to take it home for $750 OTD. It came with 4 sets of stocks (original dark wood combats, 2 pairs of Hogues, and a set of Pachys), and I like the SDM fiber optic front sight. The FO sight was probably not installed at the factory, although there are some Product Codes in the "SCSW 4th Ed." that show FO sights on 3" barrel 686s. Unfortunately there was no box or IL key, but I think I'll install an IL hole plug on this one anyway. The s/n (CZH8838) means it was probably manufactured in 2015, and it's close to the last of the alpha-numeric date codes listed in the "SCSW 4th Ed.". The condition of this revolver is excellent, and all I did was give it a thorough cleaning and RenWax. I like it and will be at the range soon! Enjoy!

I think you did pretty well on that buy. The non-fluted cylinder suggests the 686-6+ TALO like the one below (DNC prefix). I installed "the plug" on this one as well. Lower left.

Nice-looking revolver.

I agree that this one looks like one of the TALO 3-5-7 series, offered in three, five, and seven-inch barrel lengths and unfluted cylinders.

Enjoy it!

I saw two 4" 686's in a shop yesterday. One was a Dash 0. I think the other was a Dash 4. Both were $750. I already have three, a Dash 0, a Dash3 seven shot and odd 7" my brother gave me. That one is soon going deer hunting. I haven't seen many of theses in shops for a while. I do like an unfluted cylinder.

Yeah, this 686-6 is kind of a mystery to me. With 7-shots it is a "Distinguished Combat Magnum Plus", and it looks like it could be a TALO with the unfluted cylinder and black/silver stocks (but no "TALO" imprinted on the textured stocks, just "357" and the S&W logo). The barrel is not ported so it's definitely not a 3" Carry Comp or Lew Horton, and I couldn't find any Performance Center Product Code for this one in the SCSW 4th Ed. The problem is that the TALO revolvers were issued around 2010, and my s/n prefix (CZH) says 2015. The only Product Code I could find that was close is 164300...3" RR, WO, SG, IL, 2007-2015. But no mention of an unfluted cylinder. It's a really cool revolver, but any ideas about what it is?

They...

They became standard production and still named '3-5-7' or '.357' series (as shown on the grip panels), with 3", 5" and 7" barrels, same as they were under Talo. Back in 2015-2016 one of these could be purchased new for under $700. Also, not sure if this wasn't already mentioned, the OP's one front sight is not original.

Thanks for the update. It helps clear up my mystery. I figured that the SDM FO sight was aftermarket since S&W used Hi Viz FO sights on their limited production models.
