AK-47 Question

What you have noticed is the AK-47's crude version of a muzzle brake. In AK circles it is known as a slant brake due to the shape you have described. The slant brakes are reverse threaded and can be replaced by a variety of more effective after market muzzle brakes, compensators, and flash hiders/suppressors.

Slant brake. It's on an angle to reduce muzzle climb. Works pretty well for when it was made.
