Anyone have any comments on the AK-74? Thinking about getting one from my local gun shop for $699. There are 3000 rounds of for it and 6 mags for an additional price. Did a lot searching on the net for info because this AK-74 is new to me. Seems like a good deal but it is used and on one gun site, gunbrokers, I could buy NIB for $600.00. More interested in the reliability.

ANy help from any of you would be welcome. Can't buy an AR so help me die so I thought it might not be a bad idea to pick this little critter up.

5.45, I assume. As the owner of two AKMs (7.62X39), $700 sounds a little steep. The AKM family is absolutely low-maintenance. A friend of mine had an SAR1 he intensionally didn't clean for over a year of shooting-no problem. As a rule, the 74s are more accurate than the 47s. As much as I love the AKMs, that kind of money can probably get you into the AR-type family. That statement would probably get me banned from the AK Forums.

Wow, I just did a search. That's about the going rate for an AK 74. Man, prices have gone up. Before they were banned in Connecticut, I bought an AKM for $375 (SAR1), around 2002.

Do you know who made it?
Are you using AK74 as a generic term for an AK style rifle in 5.45x39 or is that the actual model name?

value depends on components and manufacturer. You'll want to find out more details first. If it's a Century than that price is about right. If it's an Arsenal then you're getting a good deal, ones with milled receivers are worth more also.

The round is just a little less effective than our 55gr 5.56 according to a NRA article I saved from the 80s. I don't know how it stacks up to the SS109 In any case if you search for information you might find that the Russians, in Chetznia, started mixing 7.62x39s AKs in their units because the 5,45x39 didn't have the wall penetration they needed for urban fighting.

There is a good mag out now by Guns&Ammo that is called "the complete book of the AK47"It covers a good bit about the AK74.Kalashnikov hates them but I am sure it is an improvement accuracy wise, just less penetrating round power wise. There is a good article about a US military man in Iraq who used AK47's in their Hunvees as close support fire weapons and kept their M16 put up for the distance shots.Of course these are real AK's(Avtomet=automatic)and not the clones were buying.I really like my AK pistol and rifle but I can't figure out why.If you want a rifle you can actually do target work or coyote hunting with get a AR15.My pastor bought one off a guy as we were leaving a gun show for $400.It was a Olyimpic with a soft case and three mags. This was a month ago. There out there if you look.Good luck...Mike

You can buy AR15s via Auction Arms or Gunbroker, you'll just have to pay a premium.

Mags are a bit harder to find for the AK74 and the ammunition supply is entirely dependent on importation that could be cut off by the stroke of a pen via EO from the White House.... But for now ammo is still reasonably priced, albeit often corrosive surplus.

Love my AKMs as well, but couldn't afford an AR at the time-now banned in CT. also. The AKM in 7.62 seems to be about 3-6" @100 with Wolf. Not exactly a tack driver, but a lot of fun.

3-6" is pretty good.I have heard 3-5" and the ones they were using in Iraq they listed at 5-15" but the guy thought that might have to do with some sruffy ammo they scrounged up.They are fun to shoot and always go bang unlike some refined guns I have owned...Mike

My AK-74 is a Polish Tantal. Bought it because the canned ammo was cheap. It shoots OK. Very reliable. Personally, I don't really care for the AK style. STHF though, and I might just come to love it.
