I'd like to ask any Alaskan members of this forum to report in about the recent earthquake. I am particularly concerned about forum member JP@AK, who lives in or near Palmer--reportedly the epicenter of the quake.

So far it seems like this one didn't do anywhere near the destruction of the big one over half a century ago, but it is still big enough to mess up streets, utilities and some buildings. Hoping you northerners are all OK.

EDITED TO ADD: I see another quake thread started while I was typing. Mods may wish to combine the two threads.

My wifes niece and nephew live in Anchorage and they are OK, The nieces home was not damaged other than anything loose was dumped on the floor by the rolling action. The niece and husband did spend some time sitting in their car waiting for the early aftershocks to subside, he in his underwear and barefoot. That's life in a seismic area.

Son lives in Anchorage and a cousin lives in Wasilla. Both are OK but houses trashed on the inside---stuff out of the cabinets and off the walls all over the floor---broken glass everywhere. Spent two weeks up there visiting them in August--- glad it didn't happen then.

I live on the side of a mountain just outside Eagle River, AK (about 15 miles north east of Anchorage). This was the greatest earthquake since the 1964 Good Friday earthquake to hit next to the most populous area of the state. This quake didn't have the rolling effect you often hear about, it was a hard shaker that made thing bounce hard. There is damage to structures but most won't be investigated until this next week. Most people are just working on the massive cleanup at our houses. Shelves and cabinet were almost emptied, drawers were slid open and dumped. I opened my gun safe last night for the first time, it looked like a blender was in there, everything is ok, but I'll need to empty it and reorganize everything. The ammo inside is all over the place, my wife's jewelry scattered, and documents are a mess. It'll take time to clean everything, but overall everyone is ok with no lives lost due to direct earthquake action, no large buildings toppled, and best of all everyone came together to help each other. There was not one person on the news whining about where the govt was to help them and where their free handouts were, no looting seen, and no scammers so far. Everyone pitched in and went to assessing damage and cleaning up. The non-stop aftershocks made for a sleepless night Friday and kept us on our toes yesterday, there have been hundreds of them with many greater than 5.0. We have major bridge damage on the only highway north of Anchorage so traffic will be horrible for a long time as three lanes of traffic are funneled into single lane side roads. Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers.
