I was told that any .22 rimfire fired from an average pistol is considered sub sonic as there is not enough barrel to get the push needed to become sonic. True or false?

Strictly my opinion, I would say false. Mainly there are too many variables to make that statement. I'm sure there are others that will chime in with verifiable data. My question would be where is this going? Are you wanting to figure out what round you can shoot with minimal noise? I've tested quite a few rounds because I try to keep the squirrel population under control without disturbing my neighbors. The best I've found is CCI 22 short sub sonic but it is much louder when shot from a pistol compared to a rifle. They have a 22lr that is about the same speed but is much louder, just takes more powder to get that larger bullet going. There are others, I just haven't tried them all.

It may also depend on the pistol!! :D

It's borderline. Probably depends on the ammo, barrel length and altitude. The speed of sound goes down when you go up. So border line supersonic in Corpus might be supersonic in Denver.

I have three Ruger pistols that I shoot suppressed. 22/45 with a 5.5in, 4.5in and a MKIII with a 4in. The 4 and 4.5 will shoot HV ammo without going supersonic but not the 5.5.

Whoever told you that, he doesn't know what he's talking about.

I suspect it's going to be highly dependent on what they consider to be the "average" pistol. Barrel length and bullet weight are going to play a huge part in the equation, possibly more than the powder charge or burn speed.

I have an air rifle with built-in sound suppression, and it is pretty quiet with some types of pellets. With other pellets it still "cracks" just like a .22 rifle. (A couple guys at the other end of the range thought it WAS a .22 from the sound!) This had no difference in the "charge" or barrel length, just the weight and shape of the pellet.

Per the internet, at sea level @ 68 degrees super sonic is 1126 FPS. Here in Ohio we maybe talking 500 - 700 ft. elevation.

My little 3" Bersa .22 chrono at about 980 fps with CCI's and 1171 with CCI stingers.

A Ruger 6 7/8", 1041 fps with Winchester super X and 1298 fps with stingers.

18 " Ruger 10/22 1096 fps with Federal Std. Vel. and 1161 fps with Winchester super X.

That's all the info. I have on .22's don't run them over the chrono very often and those numbers are from several years ago.

As a blanket statement that is False.

Most standard velocity 22LR ammunition will be sub-sonic from most pistols.

High Velocity 22LR will be dependent on the ammunition and firearms being used.

Hyper Velocity 22LR will be supersonic in most pistols.

Well, then, why omit such relevant info?

Rick,

Simply put, to learn. I will soon have access to a "can" and in discussing it, the subject lead to one fellow stating "all .22 is sub out of a pistol" It didn't make sense to me, therefore my question here.

Colt that is what I was looking for, thank you!!

Does it matter?

That's a real question by the way.

I don't have a silencer, and my henry lever action is good and accurate, and it's a squirrel killer. I just don't care if the bullet flies at 1100fps or 1300fps.

Then, when out in the woods arguing with my best friend from when we were in diapers, we come to the subject of who's a better shot, out comes a 22 pistol. Sometimes it's a ruger Sr22 or possibly buck mark, other times it's a cheap heritage 22 revolver... And beer cans get executed over a $5 bill, or a 6 pack, or a cigar.

And I still haven't ever heard that crack people talk about when the bullet goes supersonic

I can assure you that CB Caps fired in a bolt action, 24" barrel rifle, indoors without any ear protection is not a big deal. A hand clap is louder than the rifle.

Head shots are instantly fatal. Our critters came first, and it was their yard. Aggressive wild life was not tolerated. Kitty was 22 and had earned a "safe" fenced yard.
