Does anyone else think this social engineering experiment is totally deranged?

I wrote a paper for this very subject in college in 1997 and I basically stated that if they could meet the same standards as men then by all means - real world experience has shown me this is in error - because men and women are not the same - our bodily functions are different - women are more prone to injury under the heavy equipment we had to carry before I retired - I don't care how strong or physically fit a woman is - physiologically she can not withstand the weight and can not run or perform heavy physical tasks under prolonged combat as men generally can

What say you?

My wife spent 20 years in the Navy and is a retired Petty Officer. Like I always say, I bet my wife is meaner than your wife. At least once she made a Parris Island D.I. cry.

One of the women she served with was half Samoan and half Chamorro. She stood about my height. Lke the wrestler Nia Jax but slimmer and more toned. When her husband cheated on her, she beat him to a bloody pulp and put him in the hospital for a week or two. Do not cross a Samoan woman.

There are arguments to be made, but there isn't much point.

This goes beyond the US military and beyond this country. This is simply happening, and it was going to happen here. Most other first-world countries already have it. You can blame it on your favorite political bogeyman, but this also goes way beyond politics.

This isn't a social experiment, this is simply the new reality.

let's hear it for the girls...

Love them-married one-and she's a nurse-a job I am not capable of performing. Political correctness is the scourge of this nation, and it goes far beyond those superficial things that we typically discuss in our society. One of the things that has been greatly diminished is the "visceral response" of our adult men.

The issue regarding women in "all" military disciplines goes much farther than physical strength. Even if the woman could bench press 350#-she would still be a woman. Israel learned this the hard way. You see, regardless of ones' beliefs, men have an innate predisposition to protect women-to be the women's "covering."

So in a typical rifle squad-which would have to be the setting for this idea to be proven or discarded, in my view, each soldier is given a specific field of fire that he is responsible for. Now, when the vigerow hits the ventilator, it's tough to be disciplined, and cover your sector, but this discipline can make the difference in how things turn out. But if you are distracted-worrying about the female individual-even if she performs flawlessly-things can go the wrong way in a hurry. This innate bent to protect the woman is stronger or weaker in men-but it is there. By the way, not all men are capable of performing in this role-and many should not be used in this kind of role (infantry, etc.) Also, consider the morale impact if a woman soldier is snatched during a fire fight, and then used as propaganda-psyc ops- over the radio...

So for me-it is the metal/psychological preposition of the MALE members of the unit that causes the problems. Just the woman's presence in the unit can have a deadly effect, regardless of her fitness or sexual "orientation." NJMHO- Flapjack

Your wife made a Marine DI cry. I enjoy sea stories, but your's is the pure BS. Care to try again?

Last time this topic came up I got an infraction, so I copied the "revised" response and will copy it here, as it still applies.

Below is an interesting read and one which should be taken seriously - my view is and always has been - send the ladies in but only in a all-women unit for combat, not as an integrated unit for combat.

Ryan Smith: The Reality That Awaits Women in Combat
A Pentagon push to mix the sexes ignores how awful cheek-by-jowl life is on the battlefield.

By RYAN SMITH
America has been creeping closer and closer to allowing women in combat, so Wednesday's news that the decision has now been made is not a surprise. It appears that female soldiers will be allowed on the battlefield but not in the infantry. Yet it is a distinction without much difference: Infantry units serve side-by-side in combat with artillery, engineers, drivers, medics and others who will likely now include women. The Pentagon would do well to consider realities of life in combat as it pushes to mix men and women on the battlefield.

No, it actually happened. I don't remember why precisely, as she had a reputation for mean ness in general and was generally considered unpleasant to work with. Her eval for the time frame said something like she was usually right but as pleasant about it as rusty barbed wire.

The incident happened over something to do with adherence to whatever regulations they were enforcing. There were always all sorts of things that were an issue when it came to health, safety and sanitation. Water samples, mess halls, all sorts of environmental issues came up.

Probably as much frustration or a nervous breakdown, she actually felt bad about it as the story was related to me in a rather glum way and had to do with her nickname of the Bulldog. While making recruits cry was easy and expected, but when staff lost it...I suspect it made everyone uncomfortable. Some people just cracked I suppose, the DIs had long hours and a tough job, some of them were recovering from multiple deployments etc. The story then followed her with a touch of irony as she became the one "so mean that"... etc.

If I had to throw myself on top of a comrade to save them from a stray champagne cork, I would prefer they be female.

Rusty, I've finally come to realize that there is just no damn hope for ya. But for gosh sake keep up the good work:D;)

I don't understand this at all. -- I served in an infantry unit in combat, and I witnessed a number of MEN you couldn't hack it physically. Not that they weren't trying, they just didn't have the physical ability to hump 100+ pounds for hours, even days at a time. I just don't see it working, not to mention the personal and hygiene concerns. It may work on paper, but when the crack & thump of incoming happens, all of their social experiments will go away ,pronto.

There's an old Southern axiom that goes...

"Just because you could doesn't mean you should"

Women in the military are just a smart (if not smarter) than their male counterparts. Female fighter & gun ship pilots have already proven this.

But "boots on the ground"?

Besides the strength and stamina issues, the glaring obvious can't be ignored, their "sex".

If they are captured by the enemy...God help em!

A while back, some expert made the startling revelation that men and women are different. Who woulda thunk, right?

If those differences can be exploited for the good of our military and detriment of our enemies, great. Otherwise, don't get people killed over a social exercise.

Not long ago the Chief of Staff of the Army said "Maybe our training standards are too high." Don't worry, we see a lot of "norming" and ye Olde Military Standbye of pencil-whipping the records.
It has nothing to do with military effectiveness and effeiciency desperate manpower shortages and everthing to do with "career enhancement" and, like the repeal of DADT, pleasing a key constituency.
Most of the Marines I have met recently have expressed nothing but contempt for their female counterparts.
And the popgun wars we have fought lately are not a real test. IMHO combat is the Pusan Perimeter, Frozen Chosin , the Ardennes, D-Day, Iwo Jima, the operations in Vietnam lasting up to six weeks or longer.

Women in combat will get some people kill who otherwise would of lived. The dead will be comprised of both males and females, so even though their deaths will be unnecessary, at least it's "fair".
