Alligator kills man in south Louisiana

A long while back I was taking the family to the Miami area. As dawn broke we were still on the road called Alligator Alley and I was the only person awake. I pulled to the side of the road and started walking around the Suburban trying to wake up. After a few minutes I looked around and realized I was the only thing moving so far as the eye could see. I decided to jog down the road a bit to get the blood moving and after a short distance decided that I'd jog to the brown log and turn around. The log was the only thing visible that wasn't green.

The "brown log" turned out to be a very dead-and about 8 foot long-alligator. The trip back to the Suburban was considerably faster than the trip out. The night before I heard some truckers talking on the CB about some poor guy who hit a "really big 'un" and tore up the rear axle area of his rig.

Come to think of it, was also the year some kid got snatched by a gator in some park-first fatality in quite some time. The media seemed outraged that the gator had the bad taste to pick on a tourist.

A couple of years ago I was going home in Luling, la from LaPlace, la. As I entered St Charles Parish on US 61, I saw a bunch of flashing lights. There was an alligator that was at least 10 ft long in the road with a state trooper car directing traffic around it.

The next day I saw the local alligator control officer and I asked him if he heard about the gator. He replied "It's in my freezer". The troopers had called him to pick up the gator because they did not want to touch it.

The noon news said that the gator crawled back into the swamp after laying on the road for several hours.

I thought only squirrels used that little ploy to attack us.

Kinda not funny, considering how abruptly some drivers brake to avoid hitting a squirrel. I follow at a reasonable distance, but almost hit one car that did that.

I did kill one that streaked right out in front of me before I could react. Small street, fast squirrel. I felt pretty bad about it, but had I braked, the truck behind me would probably have rear-ended me.

I thought for sure this was going to turn into a discussion about the correct caliber car to hit an alligator with...

From what I saw on the local news the alligator didn't make it. Driving along I-10 towards kenner sitting on the side of the road was a gator. Didn't know wether or not he was dead or alive. State trooper right behind me. Frank
