DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME, BOYS AND GIRLS. THIS GUY IS A TRAINED PROFESSIONAL ! ! ! MOST OF US WOULD BE BETTER SERVED, CARRYING THE HIS MORE APPROPRIATE MOUNTAIN GUN, IN .44 MAG......

I LIKE BUFFALO BORE'S HARDCAST BULLET, WHICH I ASSUME, MUST BE AVAILABLE IN .44MAG, AND LARGER CALIBERS. I HAVE NEVER HAD THE OCCASION TO NEED THEM. THE ABILITY TO PENETRATE DEEPLY, AND SMASH BONE, IS EXACTLY WHAT IS NEEDED, WHEN FACING A LARGE, ANGRY CARNIVORE ! ! !

I WOULD HAVE BEEN CARRYING THIS MOUNTAIN GUN, IN .44 MAG, WITH APPROPRIATE AMMO, EVEN ON A "GUIDED" FISHING TRIP IN ALASKA......

While I am a firm believer in shot placement being more important than caliber, I'm also a firm believer that this guy was lucky. Extremely lucky. On large game, the shot placement window becomes narrower as the caliber/velocity/energy decreases. There was a reported case of a woman killing a grizzly with a single shot .22 long rifle. It doesn't mean she or this guide were good, it just means they were lucky. Very lucky.

Would I pick an Alaskan guide who arms himself with 9mm pistol in bear country? Not in a million years. Even if his last name was Miculek. ;)

Absolutely no denying that it was not a very good move to go into bear country with only a 9mm, but he is still alive. I'm not sure I would be armed with what he had.

The take away for me is being able to think rationally under extreme stress.
