In 1970 I bought a teal sapphire neckless and matching ear rings in the Saigon,VN PX, as a B-day present for my mother. I don't remember what I paid for them but it could not have been more than $50-75, because I was having most of my pay sent home to my wife and kids. My wife inherited this jewellery when my mother passed. Recently she decided she would like to have the stones reset in a custom neckless. Before spending a lot of money for the project she had the stones officially appraised by a certified jewellery appraiser. Amazingly, in his report he stated the the 8 stones were a rare teal color and were flawless. He appraised the stones alone as being worth $18,000. My wife got her custom made neckless which is worth more than the stones by themselves.
We are keeping the neckless locked in my gun safe.
I would never have believed that some of the Jewellery on sale in the Saigon PX, for really not many $$$ could be worth so much 54 years later. I know that 22 caret gold was a lot cheaper in VN than in the states.
We are keeping the neckless locked in my gun safe.
