Steve H,
Unless it was added later, the Model 39 doesn't have ambi safety/decocker. The left grip was cut away to accommodate the safety in the down position.

Steve, can you show us a picture of what you have, is it a model 39 you modified. Like Frank
said the 39 didn't have a ambi safety from the factory. If it is a later part from another S&W that been fit to your gun it shouldn't be to much trouble to modify the grip panel. If it is the same length as the factory original part you should only need to hold the left and right panel together, scribe the line and cut away that area. Done slowly and carefully all you would need is a touch of sanding and a dab of anything clear to finish the job. If it's more than your comfortable with I would be happy to do it for you. I also have custom wood available if your ever interested. Hope this helps.

Grips from one of the later versions that used the Ambidextrous Safety could also be used.

I'm getting ready to install a new ambi safety switch on the 39 for my wife, she's a lefty.
I thought about just modifying a pair of stock grips for it, maybe I'll pick up an extra pair and give it a go with the Dremel.
I didn't know a later set would fit, I'll see what's available. I'd like to stay with wood grips, so if the later ones are wood too then I'll probably go that way.
thanks guys!
