If you were going to buy some .38spl and .45acp which would you get assuming they were within a few dollars of each other ($4 diff on an order of 100 38spl and 200 45acp).

I have used both manufacturers, both calibers. They are basically the same in my experience. I would buy the less expensive for range ammo.

No complaints about any of them.

The only hitch I can see between the two is that some American Eagle .45 ACP's are small primer. This is only a concern if you reload and this bothers you. It shoots just fine.

I'd go with the American Eagle (Federal) which is always consistent. Remington ammo (at least from my testing and experience is NOT what is was).

Another reason to go with the AE is that Federal (the Makers of AE) brass is also better than the Remington and will be better for reloading.

chief38 sums up my experiences as well. I have used the Federal American Eagle ammo in 38, 9mm, 45 acp, and 223/5.56 for many years now and have always found it to be very consistent AND accurate. I will always choose it over Remington/UMC.

X2 what Chief said if you reload like I do. Remington brass is just ok, a little on the thin side.

If you don't, personally I haven't experienced any tangible differences between the two that would make me choose one over the other for plinking.

I also always choose American Eagle over Remington, in any caliber. Speer Lawman or American Eagle for practice, Gold Dots and HST's for defensive carry. ATK all the way, for me. ;)

I'm with chief38... I buy American Eagle because of the Federal brass, which is considered better for reloading. If it was a cartridge I didn't reload, I would just go for the cheaper of the two. Whatever performance differences there may be are so small I cannot see them.

Another vote for American Eagle. I will buy it and Sellior & Bellot, Fiocchi, or Blazer Brass before I buy UMC. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I've seen too many quality control issues with UMC.

In my 9mm ammo box I have: Federal Champion, REM-UMC, WWB and Blazer Brass.

In my 45acp ammo box I have: Federal Champion, REM-UMC, WWB, Blazer Brass and PMC.

I do not buy 38 Special factory ammo, as I refuse to pay minimum of $21,99/box 50 for something I can reload for $5.00 or less for same bullet type/style. Never thought I'd see other calibers be less expensive than 38 Special-my how times have changed!

Otherwise, all of the above ammo has shot well in both my 9mm pistols and my 1911 FS 45 auto. I buy what I can find at the best price and it all seems to work about equally. They all make my guns dirty, so cleaning is needed no matter what I choose to shoot. TulAmmo BrassMaxx also shot well.
