I have purchased a Sigma sw40ve, and a box of ammo with it.
The sales man told me that ammo was 10mm. They look 9mm
to me. On the box it says 40 S&W!

Please forgive my ignorance but never heard 10mm ammo!
Some one maybe offer me some enlightement....:-)

Here's a photo of three similar rounds.

They are from left to right: .357Sig, 10mm, .40S&W
Only the one on the right will work on your SW40VE. As the others have said, look at the head stamp and make sure you are using the proper ammo.

10mm and .40 cal have the same diameter bullet the difference is the case length. The 10mm has the taller case as shown in the pic in above post.

Look at what he case says, and I doubt the 10mm will fit in the .40 mag.

If it says .40S&W on the headstamp of the round it'll work. 10MM is basically .40 cal magnum. As the pictures provide above show, it's a longer round & will not work in a .40 cal gun.

I think I would also be rethinking my choice of gun shop. Who works at a gun shop and doesn't know the difference in 10mm and 40S&W?

The 10mm dimensions are 10x25. 40S&W is 10x21. A 40 is a toned down 10. If you awn a 40S&W handgun then use only that caliber. For your purposes they are not interchangeable.

Gents,

Thank you for the usefull info. Here is what is on the casing!

40 S&W WOLF

I guess this is 10mm.

I have never fired this gun yet! My wife is very uneasy having this perticular gun around the house; because the gun has no safety button! When I was buying it I did not pay attention...

If I find a smilar caliber or a 9mm automatic with a safety future, I would exchange it. Just to make her happy!!

PS: Just to be sure ;

On the barrel....it is written

SMITH & WESSON
springfield, MA USA SW40VE

It NOT a 10mm if it says 40s&w. If you are buying a 10mm it will say "10MM" on the box. 10mm has a longer case than the 40s&w. The 40 was created as a toned down version of the 10nm. Wolf is Russian manufacturer. If it says 40s&w on the box and on the head stamp its 40 and can be used in your gun

A safety is a mental thing. That gun is safe and cannot be fired by dropping or tossing it around. On the other hand if you have one with a safety you or her better practice a lot otherwise in a stressful situation, when seconds count, people tend to forget to disengage the safety.

To be sure about what? Many guns are chambered in 40s&w cal, not just S&W guns.

Yes and no. IT IS ILLEGAL TO BUILD A SILENCER...ILLEGAL ILLEGAL ILLEGAL. If you built one and get cough its 10yrs in club fed no ifs, ands, or buts. I'd recommend you re read your post and edit accordingly

IF IF IF your state/town/county allows NFA weapons you can buy one from a class 3 dealer and he will hold it for you until you complete, send in and receive permission from the ATF. Then you can go and pick up your silencer. Once you do that, you look for a threaded barrel for your SD40VE

It is first based on your state or city law.

40 S&W WOLF

No, no . . . 40 S&W is NOT 10mm ammo. But don't worry, you won't be able to put 10mm ammo in your magazine.

Wolf is Russian made and it has a steel case instead of the usual brass case but it is the right ammo for your SW40VE. Many modern handguns such as your Sigma no longer have safeties. Instead they have a dreadfully heavy trigger of from 8 to 12 lbs. Your SW40VE probably has a 10 lb trigger.

You need to do as ARIK said and edit your post. Please keep in mind there are a lot of Law Enforcement Officers here and you never now who is watching. You don't want that kind of heat, and misinformation or ignorance of law can make you a felon real quick.

ARIK is correct about the info on Silencers, but the cost and taxes will eat you up. Aside from that good luck finding a threaded barrel for a SW40VE.

Tell your wife not to worry about the safety. The sw40ve doesn't need one. With it cocked the striker is only about 5-10% of the full stroke needed for the striker to fire. Unlike of makes that can be at 50-100% went cocked.

The safety of your SW40VE is education and keeping your finger off the trigger until you ready to fire at your target.

There's a website, Silencers Are Legal, that discusses this subject matter. Some states actually allow individuals to manufacture their own silencers after they have applied for and been granted a license. It costs a one-time fee of $200.

I won't quote your post Topgun, because that may not change if you edit the post, but you really need to do some editing. Even a simple adapter to fit a oil filter to your gun requires a $200 tax stamp and FBI background check.

EDIT YOUR POSTS!!!
or you could go to PRISON!!!

It's a $200 fee for each suppressor and my understanding is you can buy, but CAN NOT make a suppressor.

Topgun777 - I strongly suggest you take a class for beginning shooters. No offense, but from the sound of your posts ("on the barrel it is written..." and "it has no safety button") it is clear that you are a newbie. Nothing wrong with that AT ALL...everyone started from scratch. But in addition to being very beneficial for you, getting trained might help your wife with her concerns. Just my two cents worth. Oh, and welcome to the forum and to gun ownership!
