Ammo Scams

Haven't seen any myself, including at Christmas. So, out of curiosity, what form does this scam take?

They show up looking like one of the big ammo vendor's website with prices too goot to be true. I have gotten them from Hornady, Fast Ammo, Target sports, and Nosler. The prices are too good to be true. That is all that distinguishes it from the legit company.

I see them on Farcebook Marketjunk every day. Funny thing is that they appear local and they can't possibly sell it to me (in NY) without a NICS check.

Not on Facebook so that probably helps, and as many have already said if it sounds too good it must be too good to be true.

I generally do my own ammo searches using ammoseek and I've already found several dealers I've bought from that I'd pay a few pennies more just to buy from them.

If the vendor doesn't want credit cards, run away. At least, with a credit card, you can dispute a purchase in case of, for example, non-delivery or a "lost" shipment. It's happened to me, through a vendor on Ammoseek. It could have been an honest screwup or even a theft, but, the shipment "disappeared", the shipper could not locate the shipment, the vendor was very slow with a refund they claimed would be made, and I had to file a dispute, which was successful.

They show up in my email

Ah, spam and junk mail. Not easily blocked, as your name and email addresses are either "mined" from legit sites, or even sold to data aggregators who create the spam lists. Some of it does come from the cookies. And sender addresses are often spoofed, and remain unblockable.

I block various entire domains and addresses with settings in my email apps and my router, yet it doesn't slow down. I have 800-1000 spam and junk emails to delete every week.

Ammo, primers and powder at great deals on relatively decent looking sites but when you put something in the cart it asks for Venmo or Zelle payment only - no credit cards. Well, we all know now this is a scam… I loaded up a cart and let it sit and a while later I got email reminding me to check out for immediate shipping… I emailed back that I had a buddy on the local PD that would come, pay in cash and pick up my stuff. I had already googled the address and found it was in a trailer park… I was anxious for a reply that never came… If the deal sounds too good - well, we all know the rest.

The ONLY place I buy ammo from these days is Target Sports in CT. They are the most reasonable, they have the best variety & inventory and ship for free as long as you either buy by the case or join their "club". If something is out of stock, leave your email address and they will notify you when it comes in. IMHO they are a class operation!

Being a reloader, I buy very little ammo - of course .22 LR being the major exception. On rare occasion I will buy a box or two to replenish carry ammo that gets shot up or a caliber that I do not reload such as .38 Super, .32acp, .25acp, .380acp. I don't shoot more than a box or two of those a year so I will not bother reloading them. Other than that, my range ammo comes off my Dillon press. :p
