OK sleuths I'm at my wits end on an episode I've previously watched and evidently forgot for the most part. One guy parks his car down the road. Upon breaking into a retired gentleman's house, whom I believe was a veteran, the BG awakens the home owner. Upon coming down the stairs the home owner is shot and killed whilst on the stairs.
I seem to remember that the perp used the home owner's gun that he found on the first level. I think this happened north of the Mason-Dixon either in the Midwest or the plains states.

This is driving my quite mad, so I thought I'd ask and see if anyone's memory is better than mine. I probably watched this old episode on true TV. It isn't the end of the world though it nags me from time to time.

ETA: More than likely this was an episode on HLN of Mystery Detectives, older Forensic Files 400+ episodes/14 seasons 1996-2011 from TruTV rebranded. They seem to run these episodes late night/early morning over some week-ends. I've racked me brain, but alas the old noodle, as the old gray mare, ain't what she used to be many long years ago.

I wish to believe this incident was sandwiched betwixt two others and the perp just happened upon this property after being on the run from an earlier offence. He was captured in another state possibly on a farm.

This doesn't rate w/serial number of David Berkowitz's straw purchase in Tejas Charter Arms bulldog 44 spl though it sticks w/me as well.

Dang, no replies. Me mental telepathy tells me the 1917 I bought was the older gents that unfortunately helped expedite his untimely demise.

Then the perp took a screwdriver to the inside of the barrel in attempt to change the rifling pattern hiding the tool of crime.

Well, that sounds of noir intrique/suspense instead of me barrel boogered by some schmuck clearing a squib.

I believe the episode you may be referring to was an incident that happened around Ft. Collins, CO. In this incident the old vet was at the top of his stairs with his 1911 he brought back from the war. He was shot by a perp at the bottom of the stairs and was using a 357 magnum. The bullet exited the vet, went through the roof and was found in the yard after some extensive searching. IIRC the bad guy had stolen the gun from another house. Do not bet any money on my memory though.

Yes, that was the area and the vet was upstairs, but as I recall, lord help us all, the perp found the vets gun downstairs and shot him w/it at the stairs.

For some reason I thought it was a 1917.

I do remember an episode w/round going through the roof and being found in the yard. Your memory is probably better than mine.

Anywho, the local cable co. ran those episodes periodically back to back for hrs over the weekend. Then they stopped before I could find out the particular episode.

Thanks for the reply!

Never rely on my memory, it is not as good as it used to be, and it used to be terrible. As I recall, the vet was upstairs and was awakened by the intruder. He fetched his 1911 still loaded with WW 2 ammo and was at the top of the stairs. The perp heard him stirring and laid in wait till he appeared. The old flyer was shot in the neck, the bullet passed through both the vet and the roof. A 357 magnum was what the perp used IIRC. As I have said my memory is bad. Of course we can be talking about 2 different episodes too.

Ogopogo Monster

I remember back in the late 80's an Unsolved Mysteries episode on some lake monster. I think it was somewhere in Canada and was a sort of Loch Ness monster but called the Ogopogo (Native American name).

Anyway they did this big build-up on the monster, all his various sightings, then they break in after commercial with a breakthrough in the case--actual footage of the OGOPOGO! Low and behold they roll the tape and it is a big beaver swimming along in all his glory and like I had seen a million times growing up country.

I never turned on one of those shows again, even to this day.

Probably the same episode. Perp stops on gravel road/driveway B&E w/o realizing the old gent is sleeping upstairs. Now that you mention it I do recall perp dry gulching the gent as he came down the stairs.

I think the perp had been on a somewhat extend crime spree, but as you said that could've been a different episode. I can't remember what I ate yesterday. I've no clue why I think I can recall an episode I haven't seen in years!

My fav baloney show is Bigfoot hunters.

"Hear that? That's a Squatch"!

No, that's another cracker in the woods late at night hollerin' ...

To make it more confusing....

....some of these shows use the same crimes with their own angle.

I do remember the episode and thought it was lousy luck for the guy to shoot nearly straight up and fatally wound the guy. I believe the gun was a .45 that did belong to the Vet. and they tracked the bullet through the roof.

To clear up some of these mysteries about where I saw something in particular I'll look at an episode list from the net and usually there's enough of a blurb to identify the show and episode. I've kind of obsessed on a few things that I saw and wanted to find again.

For whatever reason I was thinking 45 in the version of a 1917. I did try a couple of years ago to search. There were several different crime reinactment series and I do not recall which hosted this story. I was leaning towards Forensic Files.

The scenario does sound familiar!
But I watch so many crime shows that they kind of run together!
And as already mentioned, sometimes the same crime is presented slightly differently in a different show.
