I picked up a remington wingmaster 870 with W and T date stamp which barrel dates to 8/70. Now, I know remington made many, many, different combinations but this has a short smooth barrel with a red sight. I am not finding a good date when remington went from the wingmaster with a short or riot barrel for police use to the police model. The wood and metal are really clean on this so I dont think it was police issued. Also not sure if remington sent out these models with this red front sight.

Any insight into this configuration would be most appreciated!

YOUR 870 IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF A NICE OLDER SHOT GUN. my QUESTION IS i'm looking for the same. Can you tell me where to find and
identify what numbers and letters that would tell me what year and model I'm looking for? Thanks

When the barrel was new it had a metal sight with a white painted or silver bead. The stock set is from a newer 870 Express. Send Remington an e-mail with the serial number and they will tell you when the receiver was made. I have a new in the box 870TB that the barrel code indicates 1971 so I sent Remington the serial number and the receiver was made in 1973 so it appears that they used a barrel on hand for the newer receiver. If it has an M after the serial number then it is a magnum receiver otherwise it's a 2 3/4". The only difference between the two is the ejector that is staked inside the receiver.

No M at the end of the serial number and the barrel is stamped 2 3/4. I was guessing the red ramp was a replacement but was hoping not. I can assume you are right on the wood replacement as I thought it should be a walnut. This doesnt look like walnut. Co-workers husband is very interested in buying it from me. If it was an original example with no parts changed out I would be leaning towards keeping it. This is just a really solid and tight example.

I bought a reminton slug gun for upstate NY for deer. Has the rifle sights and fancy walnut checkered forend and buttstock. This was back about the mid 80's. Couple years back I got a couple of the 870 police turn ins at a good price. The wood appears to be either birch or beech. And the barrels only have the brass bead front sight. I've shot all three and they definitely like Remington slugs. Dealer at a local gun show where I bought my riot guns said he had a bunch. All were covered with rust. About 4 hours each with some CLP and 4/0 steel wool revealed no pitting but some minor scratches. I definitely got my money's worth. Frank
