Way back when, I went back and forth across the SW several times.
This was before the interstates, so I used different routes so see different places.
So one afternoon I was up in the middle of N AZ on a two lane highway.
I see a trading post not unlike the one in the other thread.
So I stop and go in.
I see the old school pop cooler , slide open the lid and get a soda.
Open the bottle, and turn toward the counter.
Behind the counter were a man and a woman. The woman appeared to be the boss and she was in full rant.
I'm not putting up with this **** anymore!
Where is that Sheriff? When you need the law you can't get any help.
The guy nodded and agreed with her.
When I stepped closer to the counter, I could see a young man laying on the floor behind the counter.
This place had a bar in the rear and an opening between the convenience store and the bar.
They apparently had a package sales license. I could see bottles of booze sitting in the rear barroom but accessible from the front.
Apparently the prone guy had reached in for a bottle and the Cowboy clerk who was wearing a big turquoise ring hit him. And down he went.
As I am drinking my pop and taking in the sights and excitement of the Grand Canyon State, two other apparent young Navajos came into the store.
I backed up and watched.
They grabbed their buddy and carried him out.
The folks in the store did not try to prevent that.
I followed them outside to see where they were going .
They took him up the hill behind the trading post.
The trading post was probably on a small plot of deeded dirt.
As soon as they up the hill, they were probably back on the Res and beyond the jurisdiction of State LE.
If they had gone down the highway, the Sheriff could have caught them.
I went back in, put my empty bottle in the case and paid for the soda.
The entire time I was there I was completely ignored almost like I was invisible.
I made a parting comment, like, most of my stops are never this exciting!
