This morning at the local swap meet, I spotted a cherry 6”
629 with box and original grips. Upon closer inspection, I saw it was a -4 with 1/2 lug barrel, square butt and flash chromed hammer/trigger; I’ve never seen a -4 configured like that. All my -4s have full lugs (except my -4,MGs), round butts and CCH hammer/triggers. Transition gun? Although it was unique to me, I wasn’t really interested in a 6 incher, especially at $1250. However, since I’d never seen one like this, I figured I’d waive 9 Bens under his nose. He declined. I didn’t get far before he stopped me, countering with $1050. I politely declined and continued walking. Guess $900 was better than no $$. Not sure if it’s a great deal, but I had a set of Tulipwood Houges and combats that needed a home.

Next stop was one of my honey holes. Definitely wasn’t looking for another M60, but couldn’t resist a mint 60-7 LS for $475 OTD.

Real nice, CH4. Don't the -4 629s come with color case hardened hammers and triggers instead of flash chromed ones usually? And I think the rear sight mounting hole and sight were changed from the -3 too, IIRC.

My late 629-3 has the same, new rear sight as the -4, etc. All my other -4s have CCH hammers and triggers. My new gun must be transitional.

It must be. They still had some flash chrome hammers and triggers left, which I think look great on a stainless gun anyways. BTW, the Hogues look good on that gun too. You done good at that swap meet in my opinion.

Is your "local swap meet" for firearms enthusiasts only, or is it more like our "flea markets" with everything under the sun for sale? Down here in sunny Florida, the folks would have a coronary if guns were available on vendor tables at a flea market. There are some guys that have "weekend gun stores" at the flea markets, but they are governed by FFL rules, etc. Just curious.

It’s a mix of everything under the sun. Typical flea market.

When did they stop using square butt frames, 94?

S&W went to all round butt frames in 96. I have a 29-6 built in the same time frame as your dash 4 that is a transitional gun with square butt and the old style thumb latch. The rubber Hogue grips are unusual too for a sb. The normal sb Hogues had the clunky looking hunk of rubber over the side plate. Congrats on the two new catches.

Thanks!

I agree with the Hogues that cover the side plate being ugly; it’s definitely a carry over from Guy Hogue’s original wood grips. I don’t recall Smith’s OEM Hogues with that unsightly feature.
