At my age, I should know better than to buy a gun and check out how I did after I get it home... at a local shop today and saw a really nice 17-4, 6 inch, no box, aftermarket grips, but at least 95% conservatively, maybe a bit better. They were $699 firm on it. Not pinned, SN 99K3252 so I figure around 1981-82 production. My excuse is my wife was waiting in the car and I had to make a quick decision.....

I am a novice collector, but I am trying to improve my knowledge by browsing this Forum.

Two questions: Did I do okay on this one, and how can I go about getting a set of correct factory grips for it (preferably from another Forum member)? Thanks very much for any advice you can give me.

700 sounds good, unless you want to go to a gun show and pay a lot more

Welcome to the Forum. But, coming here expecting to get anything other than folks cheering you on is wishful thinking. Sounds like a good buy to me. Lots of stocks for that vintage available at not too high prices. We love pictures. Here are the stocks you'll probably want for your 17-4.

Thanks to everyone who replied. The reply about gun show prices is very true in my part of the country. Any vintage Smith or Colt revolver in decent shape usually has a crazy high price tag and they won't budge on it.
My local dealers are generally pricing collectible revolvers off Gun Broker, etc. auction site prices but it seems like they are only looking at the minimum bid or buy now prices instead of the prices similar items have sold for. I'm relatively new to all this, but I'm seeing way more of the guns I'm interested in rolling over with no bids at the minimum bid price and the ones that are selling are at prices considerably less than what was asked on previous listings for the same item.
However, it seems the pristine ANIB examples with box, papers, etc. are selling at the expected nosebleed prices to the deep pocket collectors.

I bought my Model 17-4 many years ago at the Ft. Worth gun show for maybe a little less than you paid. I think you got a good deal.
