So, I get a phone call from folks who tell me that one of my credit cards has been compromised. They have lots of information, so I work with them. They help me determine which credit card has been compromised. With the complete understanding that credit card fraud doesn't really scare me, I know how to cancel fraudulent charges, I work with them. For days. They seem to be diligent and persistent but we're not getting anywhere. I am still getting notices of large charges that are unauthorized and these folks are trying to help. Still all good.

They tell me to bring the card to their offices. Okay. Except their offices are 50 miles away, so I'm not doing that. Can you pick up the card? Yes, we will send UPS. Okay, fine, I'll leave it for you.

They pick it up - my Ring camera shows an unusual person picking it up, but, as noted, I'm not overly concerned.

It gets interesting when I tell them that all of the text notifications ask "Press 1 for valid and press 2 for invalid". I press 2. The text fails to go out every time. Is it my phone causing the problem?

Anyway, nothing is happening, they're persistent, I feel like they're trying to help, and then they realize I am pressing "2" on the texts, and the woman says, "My supervisor says press 1".

Excuse me? 1 = yes, a valid charge. This gets my attention for the first time.

So, I call the bank, and we review all the fraudulent charges. Apparently, they were declined, but they are out there. The bank declines them all and removes them and I tell them I don't have the card so we decide it's stolen, easy deal, card cancelled, new card coming, new account number, etc.

The lady "helping" me calls. I told her I had all of the charges cancelled, terminated the card, and I'm getting a new one.

Click. Phone goes dead.

I laugh, and I send one more test.

"Press 1? Nice try!"

:ROFLMAO:

Bottom line - my card was compromised, I THINK at a Walmart where I never shop, but my girlfriend needed something there. Oh, well, no harm, no foul, except and unless those charges really happened and merchandise was stolen from the stores identified. That's unfortunate, but I escaped unscathed.

21st century!!!! :poop:(n)

New one to me - Never heard of "we'll come pick up your card."
My USAA Credit Card folks are in San Antonio or somewhere.
When I got taken, they told me - your Card is cancelled and account is closed!
Chop that card! New card will be sent!
Just saw on YouTube - they wanted the Victim to buy Gold and give it to a dude down at the Shopping Center!
I have another heavy soft metal available for them.

I NEVER speak to anyone calling about my credit cards. I hang up and call the number on the back of the card to see if there's really a problem. So far, there hasn't been, so I know the calls were scams.
Hi, I got scammed with a $7000 charge on a credit card where they spoofed the credit union's Fraud line phone number. I was calling the Fraud line when they called me. 7 or 8 years ago.

Last year I awoke one morning to find over 100 email messages in my inbox. Most appeared to be acknowledgements that I had signed up for regular info emails from various government agencies, and after looking at a dozen or so, I just started going through and deleting them without reading. I was just about through when my "spidey senses" started tingling, so I did a quick google search for what may have caused all these sudden email subscriptions. What jumped out at me was info about a scam, when the scammers want you to ignore warning emails, they'll sign you up for all kinds of junk hoping that you'll just delete them all including the important ones. I went to my trash folder and after a few minutes I discovered several that I'd already deleted from the company that has my health savings account. They were advising that transfers had been requested, and were pending, for funds totaling over $10,000. A call to the company confirmed what was going on, and the transfers were blocked, the account locked, and more security measures put in place.

FYI everyone, the SOBs are relentless. Don't let your guard down.

Capital One (aka Giant Blood Sucking Squid) decided to send me a new credit card earlier this year. New Club level (Cabela's) or something. They mailed me a notice they were sending me one but I wasn't keeping track of it. All of a sudden one day I get a notification of a $8,300 charge at the Cabelas in Spring TX. Uh, no. I replied no and called instantly and they stopped it. It was stolen out of the mail. We live in an old townhouse and still get our mail in the door-slot, so not from our box. Why on earth do they send out cards that don't need some kind of verification? That's on them. I wonder what he bought.....

It's my Primer and Powder Points Card. Mostly powder as their primers are still expensive. Powder is not cheap anywhere. But if you hit one of their "Member Mondays" with the 10% off and do ship-to-store they have free shipping and no Hazmat. CFE Pistol/HP-38 is $40 a pound that way and I don't have to order a lot. Every once in a while I just burn my points on powder.

Also have the Cabela Cult Card.
Mostly buy ammo, did buy one gun.
Get Vet Discount and Club Cash.
Every little bit helps!
And I'm always on the look out for economic opportunity!
Just the other day I found this Guatemalan 50 Centavos.IMG_0905.webp
