I have an m&p 15 sport model on lay away. Im buying it to build on not to save money. go ahead bash me.

My quick question is will a stag arms A3 flattop upper assy fit on the M&P sport.

Im buying this rifle to get the feel of an AR and mess around with it and Mod it. like a learning piece.

It will fit... you are a giant D bag....

Not really but since you asked for it.

thanks just want to make sure. yes i am also an *******, and to some guys at work im racist. oh well. i cant wait to get the gun.

and 1 and 9" twist is for heavier grain bullets 45-68 grain right?

1:9 will handle up to 62 grain with no problem. It will probably handle the 68 grain, but each barrel is different. It really isn't the weight, but more the length and shape of the projectile. Also, the range you are shooting will make a difference. You may get decent groupings at 100 yards, but the groups may really open up past that.

Yeah, im with you. No one wants those cheap sport parts. Look, ill take those junk parts your rightly discarding for you. No charge btw!

only thing im not keeping is the upper thats it for now. i do plan on taking the front sight off, and the heat sheild and making the barrel free floating with a diamondhead rail. put on a new muzzle break, acog scope or nikon, and new iron sights.

Have you looked at the M&P 15T? It might be cheaper for you in the long run. The lower is the same as the Sport, but the upper has the forward assist and the dust cover, and since it already has a free float rail, it has a low profile gas block, so you would have less parts to buy... guess it depends on how low you can get the Sport for. Plus the T has the 1:8 twist, 5R rifled barrel.

im getting the sport for 650ish. the place i looked at they dont have the M&P15T or else i would have put that on layaway. they had a stag but they want way to much for it.

is the 1:8 twist better than the 1:9

The M&P 15OR could be a good candidate too. Comes with a standard upper, but you aren't paying for a free float rail or sights that you aren't going to use anyway. You would have to get a low profile gas block with that one...

I think I would have to sit down with an Excel spreadsheet and do the calculations if I was planning to build like you are.

is the 1:8 twist better than the 1:9

I'm not going to say that it is better, flat out. It depends on the ammo that you intend to shoot. It should stabilize the longer projectiles better. What makes that barrel preferable is the 5R rifling. It is supposed to be a more accurate barrel. I'm not sure if I would be able to tell a difference with my shooting, but it looks good on paper! :D

I know. Everything is a thought right now. I just want to get an AR. I may buy this one and keep it how it is and build my own. I mean never know when AR prices go up again.

If you are like most of the guys on this board, it doesn't matter what you buy... you will be changing something! :D

This is probably the best idea.

I was in a similar position as you once, just wanted to get an AR while one could still be had and not at an outrageous price. I had a vision of what I wanted attached to it and what I wanted it to look like.

But then I bought one and started adding all the things I just *knew* I wanted. But after some shooting, I went in a different direction on just about everything.

There is what you "know" you want before you have shot the rifle, and what you know you want after you've shot the rifle. And, despite due diligence and exhaustive hours of research before the purchase, the after the purchase things you want on your gun are not the same as when you just dreamed about it.

Buy your Sport, spend your first wave of money on ammo and range time and find out what you truly want, need, and can't live without.

And yes, the stag A3 flattop will fit.

Okay well change of plan haha. I went to my lgs and talked to them about the sport and the tactical. He asked me what I wanted to do with the sport and I told him, new upper, free floating barrel, quad rails, flip sights, acog, new muzzle break. He said well you can do that for just a hundred or so less than the tactical. Then I asked if he had any tactical, told me I can order one. I told him just do it. Will save me from buying all the tools. And I get the 1:8 inch twist melitine barrel. So now I'm getting the m&p15t for 1075.

Congrats! Really didn't mean to torpedo your build, but I thought it might be possible to save some money by going a different route.

yeah. all in all they would cost the same so why not just get the 15t and the 15t comes with a better barrel.
