I have 7 policies with Geico {6 vehicles - car, truck, RV, bike, Rzr, a trailer and an Umbrella policy}. I've been with them for a couple of years with no issues until now.

On our last trip we picked up a rock chip in the windshield of our Class C motorhome that quickly grew into a foot long crack. I called Geico when I got home to get it repaired. When I signed up I was assured that would include glass coverage but they neglected to disclose it comes with a $500 deductible
which renders this coverage all but useless... but I digress, Arrrg but my bad for not reading the fine print but still I thought I could trust them and that was my second mistake.

About 2 and half years ago {pre Geico} I replaced {out of my pocket} the same windshield due to a chip/crack at the local Safelite Glass shop. The bill was $222 OTD. When I called Geico never mentioned the $500 deductible but did {allegedly} schedule the repair with a Safelite guy for Saturday between 11 and 5 with the promise he would call to confirm before coming out.

After 3 hours of waiting with no call I called Geico back and was told no appointment had been scheduled despite having received an e mail confirming it... Grrrr! They then rescheduled for Tuesday between 7 - 11. about 5 minutes later I get another confirmation email from Geico listing the following charges:

Parts and Labor $319.99
Disposal$9.95
Mobile fee $24.99
subtotal $354.93
Sales Tax $15.86

Total $370.79
{Credit cards accepted}

Keep in mind Safelite did the previous windshield replacement on the same vehicle for $222

When I called back they finally explained about the $500 deductible. I asked them why I was just hearing about it now??? If I have to pay for the whole thing why would I even bother to call Geico I asked but they had no response. I asked why they were jacking the price up so high and where was all that extra money going? Again I got no answer. I asked for a supervisor/management type to please call to discuss this fiasco and no, I have not heard from them yet.

I canceled the Tuesday appointment and called a local independent shop that had done a small chip repair on my Honda Ridgeline last fall {great work in 15 minutes for a $30 charge}. They quoted me $185 OTD and had it done in 30 minutes. Over the years I have watched more than few windshield replacements and these guys were as good as any I had seen.

So there you have it, Geico trying to charge me TWICE the going rate. Think twice before you call Geico on any claims and yes, I will be shopping for a new insurer.

Several years ago I asked Geico for a rate quote. I had been with State Farm for several years but liked to check prices once in awhile to keep State Farm honest. Geico gave me a rate that was triple what I was paying for the same coverage. I had done this on line so I called them thinking this must be a mistake. No that was the rate and the lady on the phone told me what a good rate it was because they like insuring people like me. People with no claims or tickets and over 25 and under 60.

Depends on what State you live in Where are you???
In Florida (regardless of Insurance Company) Auto glass is covered under comprehensive with NO deductible.
So if you have Comp it is no charge.

Correct, think twice before using GEICO.

To get a low or 0 deductible on any auto insurance will cost you more in premiums. I must say, I'm a little surprised that you didn't know your deductible up front. It's usually prominently located in your documentation.

Some companies will waive the deductible if the crack is in front of the driver.

I’m not speaking from experience, only from observation, but the only thing Geico seems to have going for them is a lot of aggressive advertising.

I’ve been with the same State Farm agent (and before him his dad) for something like 35 years, get great service, and I’m not really interested in nickel-and-dime bouncing between different insurances because of marginal rate advantages, which is what the advertising of Geico and others wants me to do.

I’ve also not had to have my insurance company tell me where I have to get my cars repaired, or actually schedule a repair; that would not be any of their business.

I've had Geico for many years. Mostly positive, but recently not so much. Some guy hit my car in a parking lot. I got his name, plate number, tel# and address. He promised up and down he was going to take care of it. Well after about 3 weeks of him dodging me, I decided to Call Geico and see what they would say. They offered to process a claim, but only against my policy, Which meant my deductible. It wasn't worth it. I specifically ask them if they could find his insurance company, because he was liable and I had his information and they said no.

Well let's just say I have some friends, and I found out who his insurance company is. Yep Geico....I wasn't impressed and let them know that.

I wouldn’t dream of buying my insurance from any of the big insurers such as GEICO, State Farm, Allstate, Farmers, or Progressive although (probably because) I’ve represented them all: neither would any other experienced insurance defense attorney.

Instead of chasing a few dollars hunting for an insurance company with the lowest rates, buy from an independent broker and look for a company based on their claims handling practices.

Since you're a vet go with USAA. I've had 5+ chips repaired under my policy at Safelite and all were at no cost to me. However I have not needed to get a windshield replaced so I don't know what that would cost.

Their rates are better than any other I've found. My BIL (who is an agent for another company) recommends USAA if you qualify.

I had USAA quote for me on my trucks & cars. Only $50.00 cheaper then State Farm I have. Added on my house and they were $250.00 MORE!
Neediness to say I never went with the Geco...
As far a Safelite , good, bad & ugly fit them.....
Three windshields, 3 as stated above.

Been with USAA car insurance forever.
Got several thousand $ in my membership account.
I Go with those nice Army folks up at Leavenworth for home insurance.

One more thing, this is not a scam as the OP suggests. If they told him there's no deductible and then imposed one, that's wrong. However, if they never said anything about a deductible and he just failed to notice it, that's his own fault.

I would agree that it's not his fault and is disingenuous if the company had hidden the deductible in size 0 font and it was stupid hard to read.

I have been with Jake for almost 4 decades, The breakup would just be too traumatic for both of us.

Same, over 40 here, before Jake was born. :p My FIL was a Mutual of Omaha insurance man and couldn’t beat SF. He was annoyed losing a commission, when his daughter dropped her insurance and went with me and SF.  :D
