The newscaster said it was a 9mm that was in her purse. Here is the article. Dated today.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- A 3-year-old boy found a handgun in his mother's purse and fired just one shot that wounded both his parents at an Albuquerque motel on Saturday, police said. According to investigators, the toddler apparently reached for an iPod but found the loaded weapon. Police believe the shooting to be accidental. The bullet first struck his father in the buttock and then hit the right shoulder of his mother, who is eight months pregnant, police said. His 2-year-old sister was present but unhurt. Both injuries are non-life threatening, authorities said. Justin Reynolds told KOB-TV that he and his girlfriend, Monique Villescas, were getting ready to order pizza when the toddler fired the shot."It was like if I was to get up shake your hand and sat back down. That's how fast it happened," Reynolds said." All of a sudden we heard a gun go off and the next minute I realized my girlfriend was bleeding. Then, I sat down and realized I was shot, too."Reynolds said he called 911 and grabbed some towels to try to stop her bleeding."I was more worried about my girlfriend than myself and anything else that was going on. And my son because I didn't know if he had shot himself or not," said Reynolds. "He was shocked and crying. It was traumatizing."Police said in a statement that the father was treated and released, while the mother was hospitalized in stable condition." This case will be forwarded to the DA's office and pending charges of felony criminal negligence will be reviewed on both parents," Albuquerque police Simon Drobik spokesman said.
The Albuquerque Journal reports that the family was living in a room at the America's Best Value Inn where the shooting occurred.Police said child care officials are taking care of the children.Jonathan Hutson, a spokesman for the Washington-based Brady Campaign and Center to Prevent Gun Violence, said the shooting should serve as a reminder to all parents to keep guns locked away securely.

Totally senseless

I'm all for the 2nd Amendment. Yet, we have these examples of people behaving in an irresponsible manner, especially in carelessly and thoughtlessly providing children with easy access to firearms. Aside from the recent accidental shootings, including the fatal shooting in a supermarket, there's also the matter of older children gaining unauthorized access to their parents' firearms, sometimes with tragic consequences.

Maintaining control of firearms is a full-time job. whether at home, in a suitable locked container or on your person. Secondly, I was never a fan of any mode of carry in which the gun is not attached to the body.

Interesting title. When the article posted clearly stated they were the child's Mother and Father, why did you choose to say Father and Girlfriend? Why not Mother and Boyfriend, or lacking any reference to marital condition why not simply "Parents"?????? It seems by the time a relationship has progressed to the point where there is a 3 year old child, in spite of it would appear the father called the mother his "girlfriend", that the situation is far past boyfriend/girlfriend. In many states it takes far less to constitute a legally binding marriage at "Common Law"!

So, your financial situation is such that you live in a cheap hotel room, and you get to order pizza?

The title was in reference to what was reported by the Associated Press. So take it for what its worth from the source. Seems since Justin stated it was his girlfriend so the title seems correct. Below is part of the interview by the Associated Press.

Justin Reynolds told KOB-TV that he and his girlfriend, Monique Villescas, were getting ready to order pizza when the toddler fired the shot.

But does the title really matter? I didn't post it to get into a discussion if they were legally married or not. Father, mother, girlfriend, how does that even matter? What matters is it's was just another needless shooting do to carelessness of the adults around another child.

Well, some would argue that the carelessness that leads to spawning children out of wedlock may lead to carelessness resulting in an unsupervised firearm ending up in a toddler's hands. It matters, at least to some.

What makes you think their kids are a result of being careless?

I don't understand it either, I have a 6 and a 9 year old both girls. Needless to say tons of drama. I carry every day and if my piece isn't on me then it's in my bedside safe. While both girls are learning to shoot I still wouldnt trust leaving my pistol out in the open. But I also have a scar on my leg from a .270 when I was a teenager, and am very strict on handling firearms. But it only takes a second, and you take it back. I also had a friend when we were teenagers and he had a party while the parents were gone. He took a friend back to show off his fathers revolver and the friend didn't know any better and put it to my friends head and pulled the trigger. Once he realized what he had done he turned the revolver on himself. Terrible thing that happened and they came from nice families. My friend's father was a dentist and he was an Eagle Scout. Guess what I am saying is it can happen to anyone. I even had a retired game warden friend shoot himself in the leg with his glock this past December. Bullet went through the calf hit the pavement broke in to two pieces and he ended up with three holes in his leg. Just my two cent
