I read or listen to a lot of action, adventure, espionage books these days. We all know the typical super good, straight arrow, and moral lead characters like Jack Ryan, Mitch Rapp, Scot Harvath or Dirk Pitt.

Now I'm into the 6th book in a series with a really atypical protagonist... actually an anti-hero assassin named John Rain. These books by Barry Eisler have really kept me entertained and thinking.

You start off thinking "How could any reader identify with this paid assassin that takes lives so matter-of-factly?" Then you sorta get an understanding of him as it's told in the first person and you begin to see things differently. He's bad, he's good, he's immoral, he's moral... he evolves but some of him stays the same.

This is the first time I've enjoyed the anti-hero genre. I'd seen a little about "Dexter" but never got hooked like a lot of folks.

Has anyone else enjoyed the John Rain series or have another anti-hero to throw into the mix? I'm getting near the end of this series and my interest is peaked now.

BTW, the author has an interesting background and appears much more knowledgeable about guns and weapons than most writers.

I have not encountered this writer before, thanks for the tip. Dexter was the one that immediately came to mind.
