Any Buck 830 Marksman Knife Comments?

With Labor Day approaching, special holiday knife deals are appearing in my inbox. I'm thinking about buying a Buck Model 830 Marksman "Strong Lock" folding knife, because I think it might be neat. I may be able to get one delivered for under my $100/knife price limit. Does anyone out there have one? Do you love it, like it, hate it? Any quality issues with them? It will be one of many knives I have available. I do not need alternate recommendations.

I got one when they first came out. Liked it a lot but gifted to a family member. Bought another, limited edition but haven't carried it yet. Only thing I didn't care for was the pocket clip. It's a very tight fit over the hem on the pocket of my jeans. Guess I could open it up a bit. Everything else about the knife is great.

I bought mine because it’s different than anything else I owned at the time. The ball bearing pivot makes it impractical for EDC so it is mostly a fidget toy for me. And a fine fidget toy it is. The blade lock looks interesting but is not very secure. Mine was very poorly ground but I haven’t heard anyone else complain about that.

Could you expand on your comments above please? The lock on the Marksman is extremely strong. As far as the bearings I carry knives with IKBS all the time so why is the Marksman impractical for EDC?

The lock is strong enough but I wouldn’t say it is extremely so. It is easy to accidentally disengage in use. In hard use there is practically no way to hold the thing without gnarly lock bar causing discomfort. Ball bearing pivots are fine if you never get them dirty. The 830 Marksman is not one of the easier knives to disassemble when the time comes to clean it. YMMV

Thanks for the input. Some tempting knife deals have been offered recently, and I've been eyeing the Buck 830 for some time. This morning I decided to act on my desire and ordered one from MidwayUSA. Today I'm carrying a Buck 500 instead of my normal Spyderco Delica in honor of the event. Will post pictures when it arrives.

My new Buck 830 Marksman arrived today. Although the blade is 1/4" shorter than a Buck 110 Hunter, the cutting surface appears equal. Very easy to open one handed with the flipper or thumb hole. Closing takes a bit of practice. The Bos Cryogenic Heat Treated Carpenter 154CM blade came very well sharpened. It weighs in at 4.2 ounces on my kitchen scale. I agree the pocket clip needs to be opened up a bit. I like it a lot.
