I'm looking for a short bolt action carbine in 223/5.56. One of those making the short list is the Mossberg MVP Patrol. However I have zero experience with Mossberg rifles and would like to garner a little feedback if I can. I'm looking for a cheap, relatively light weight knock around carbine that is still capable of 1" groups at 100 yards. The Patrol has iron sights and a pic rail which should accommodate a small scope. I also looked at the Ruger Ranch rifles but I'm not a fan of FDE and they have no backup iron sights.

I can't speak to the MVP precisely, but I've owned three Mossberg rifles, two 4x4s and a new Patriot that I just bought this summer. I think they are hands down the best value rifles made today. They have excellent triggers, fairly smooth actions and decent build quality. My first three shots out of my Patriot could be covered with a quarter and had a nicer trigger and action than my nephew's new Savage that cost double the price.
