I submitted my application for a CCW permit here in Richmond, VA this morning. Actually, they call it a CHP (concealed handgun permit). Anyway, the clerks I encountered at the circuit court could not have been more pleasant or helpful (it took me a couple of stops before I found the right clerk, which is my fault, I could get lost in an elevator). I have heard a few horror stories about the process in various forums, but every step has been smooth here in Richmond, for which I'm grateful. Nothing is more aggravating than a balky or self-obsessed and picky bureaucracy. Anyone encountered any problems in other regions?

In fairfax it's no problem to submit the permit. The problem is that they hold your permit till the 44th day and then mail it, so you don't get it till the 45 day, which is there time limit.

It's pretty smooth in Missouri. You take a class (1 day) then go kill a paper target bad guy at the range. A quick fingerprint and application ($100) at the Sherriffs office and wait a week or two. I'm glad they don't make us wait until that 45th day!

Real easy in my county here in Pennsylvania. Walked in, handed them my drivers license, filled out the form, $25 and 10 minutes later, I was walking out with my permit.

I was back to the sheriff's office two weeks ago so my girlfriend could get hers... just as fast and easy.

My future brother-in-law however has to go through a different county. I guess their sheriff died and the guy in charge isn't that great at his job... He applied for his permit at least 4 weeks ago, nothing yet. They said they'll send him a card in the mail to come back to the courthouse to talk to the temporary sheriff. I guess he likes to talk to everyone about the rules.... PA is a shall issue state I believe, and I'm wondering if this guy is pushing it with how long it's been.

In Oklahoma they quote 90 days. My renewal took
60 days and my brothers was closer to the 90. If you are getting a renewal in OK start your process early.

I had the same easy experience in Yorktown, VA. The clerks couldn't have been nicer and the deputy doing the fingerprinting even had a nice chat with me about military rifles while waiting for the check to come through. It then took me about 14 days to get my permit.

The CPL in my state (shall issue) is done via the county sheriff's office. I can't speak to whether the county the major population center is in is less timely or not? In my county, initial took about 30-35 days. Renewal was under 10 days. The experience I had during the application and processing was one of the best I've ever had with a governmental entity. I was treated extremely well and even believe the sheriff's office was glad to have another permit going out the door. Or perhaps, the woman who was handling the process was the departments employee of the year!

I was born and raised on Cape Cod, spent the first 22 years of my life there before I moved to Virginia. It was bad when I left, and I can't imagine what it is like now. Oldest brother has his own business and considered getting a permit, but the hassle made him change his mind. It's relatively easy here in Virginia, though having to wait 4-6 weeks is getting on my nerves.

Yeah, In my town in MA I went down to the local PD and easily got an unrestricted CCW. If I lived one town over, the Chief there will only allow you to carry while hunting or target shooting. It's crazy here in MA.

I'm from Mobile, AL and the process takes
about 10 minutes and $20. I did have to wait
an extra 20 minutes while two Braintrusts
were arrested on felony warrants. The Sheriff's
office probably isn't the best place to renew
your ccw permit if you have an outstanding
warrant.

No kidding, don't mention anything about the Green, Red and Black Towns, they won't believe it.

The biggest problem here in Florida is a 3 month wait for your permit to arrive. It was in the paper that the state had to hire 68 more employees to process all the ccw's they have received since the election. Florida law says you must receive your ccw permit in 3 months from when you submit your application and they seem to be taking every day of it.
The process for us was pretty simple. We took the 2 hour course at the Gun Show. They take your fingerprints and photo, then you go to the Sheriffs Range, pick up the instructors firearm and shoot it. They give you everything you need to submit in one envelope. Just needed to add the check and drop it in the post office.
Still waiting for it to arrive.....

Tennessee is a Shall Issue state, but it usually takes about 90 days or so, from the submitting of a handgun class passing score, the application, take your lovely picture, $150.00 for 4 yr. permit and one submits fingerprints by electronic scan at another site from our DMV. Our DMV is where you apply and pay a fee. Renewal is $50.00 and a application form, similar to a gun purchase form, such as are you a citzen, any pending charges, etc.. My renewal form at the DMV is stamped and has officer ID, so it serves as my permit until our fancy plastic card arrives from Nashville. No politics or Sheriff's buddy stuff in the mix, which is great.

I just renewed my Oklahoma permit for five years. Now I wish I had just gone ahead and sprung for the ten year renewal.

When I originally got it five years ago, it took six months, six failed fingerprint attempts and finally a drive to Oklahoma City to present my finger tips in person and just told them to "deal with it"!

This time, because it took so long last time, I sent it in on about January 5...for a June 6th expiration.

After a bunch of futzing around, it appeared last week.

When you try to call them, all you get is automated telephone responses and can never get through to a real person!

Glad it's over with...for at least five years!

Here in eastern North Carolina it took me about 45 days to get my permit after I turned in my application to the county sherrif's office, They have 90 days to respond to your application. The whole application process consists of the following: (1) 3-page application with the 1st two pages being notorized along with $90 fee(includes fingerprint fee) (2)Turn in CCW class certificate(cost varies $90-$110)
