Any way to repair chip in stainless steel?

Is sanding/filing the only way to repair or smooth out a chip in stainless steel? Is there anything that can "fill in" a nick and then be smoothed out?

I guess I am looking for wood putty for metal which doesn't really exist

Actually JBWeld is pretty close.... color might not match..

I've used 'Hi-Force 44' silver solder from Brownells to fill in roll pin holes on a stainless steel Ruger slide. Color is almost perfect and it's pretty easy to work with.

IMO, the only proper way to do this repair is by having it TIG welded by a competant welder. Then it's a simple matter of leveling and blending in the surface. However, I will point out that there will be a very slight variation in the color of the welding rod alloy and the base metal of the frame. In most cases this won't ever be noticed but if someone is very attentive and really picky it will be visible. In addition, if the chip is in the sideplate or the sideplate cut in the frame, getting a perfect fit will require someone with the skills of an artist at tool and die fitting.
