Looks like the US Postal Service decided to loose my certified mail with a money order in it. Sent a m/o to PA to buy a model 457 - it got to the sort facility in SE PA - then poof - it's gone! Shipped on the 9th - got there on the 12th at 2am - but nobody can find it!! Hasn't been delivered, not at the local PO - Now what? Anybody ever had one disappear?

Take the receipt & go to the Post Office. Tell them that you want to cancel the MO and they will put a stop on it and give you your money back. At least that worked for me a few years ago. Good luck.

Thanks - I'll do that and I hope that it works that way - but in the meantime looks like he is going to re-list the gun back up for sale. I'm probably going to miss out on this one.

If I remember correctly there is a wait, 30, 60, or 90, days before you can report it MIA.

They will not give a refund for 30 days.

Sometimes the mail gets delayed, do not give up on it yet.

Contact the Postal Inspectors and report it stolen.
That gets the attention of the Postal Officals who handled the Money Order. I had the same thing happen on buying a CS-1 L Frame. The Postal Inspectors found it two days later sitting on a shelf in OKC main terminal. It was hand delivered that night.

Rule 303

If it is indeed lost you will get your money back, less a "Replacement Fee" for a refund. USPS does not do anything for free.
Theyt lost one on me a while back in MT. I sent a replacement at my expense and waited out the time frame to declare it MIA. Got a refund after filling out the papers and it was the full amount less the FEE.
I can't get over the USPS demanding more money to do the job we pay them for and then charging us a premium to deliver mail on time while they continue to lose it.

That is exactly what they did to me after THEY lost the
envelope (Priority Mail). I had to pay a fee plus it took 3 months to get my money refunded. I no longer use USPS money orders.

Never lost a money order but did have a long delay on delivery of one. I ordered a Uberti 1860 old army from a state I could have driven to in one day. Mailed payment if August seller got it in October. Told me it looked like someone tied it to the tire of the mail truck.

A few years ago I mailed a Postal Money order for payment for a gun and it got "lost". About 15 days later it was returned to me and I noted that I had added an extra 1 to the street address to the recepient! The seller was very understanding and it ended well. DOn't be surprised if you get back a mis addressed envelope with your money order in it. The post office doesn't really track your mail unless you use registered mail-then they track it like a hawk.

This happened to me this past year. I had scanned the USPS MO and had emailed it to him prior to mailing it from Afghanistan to show I bought it, plus the mail receipt when it went out from the post office. Then it goes into the twilight zone. He was understanding about the delay and I actually borrowed the money I needed to get my S&W from the forum member here. My buddies got there money on my next payday and the Post Office sent me a refund eventually. What really got my goat was that the Army Post Office would not cash the USPS check!! These are the same people I gave my cash to in order to buy the MO!!!!

Sorry to read of your problem. I hope you are able to resolve the situation to your best satisfaction. I have used USPS MO's to purchase a number of rifles... 03's, 03-A3's and M-1 Garands. I've also bought the needed stocks and metal parts for these rifles using the same USPS MO's. I've always used registered mail and have not ever had a problem. That of course is just my experience. If the USPS charges a fee to refund money I am not surprised. The USPS is not supported by taxpayer money but must produce its own revenue. It is required to service every single address regardless of the consequences to the bottom line. They can not charge one customer more for a letter than they charge another customer, regardless of where that letter, etc. is going. Add to that the extreme pension funding requirement that congress placed on the USPS and it is remarkable they can even continue in business. If any other business were required to prepay pensions in the same manner as the USPS, no other business could stay in business.

I had one go missing two summers ago for purchase of a gun. There is a 60 day wait to get a refund. Make sure they have a tracer on the letter, it may show up. I had sent mine regular mail and about 30 days after mailing it turned up and was delivered to the seller. I had him send me the PO back and was able to cash it before the 60 day period. I will not use money orders any longer.

Well, I have used M/Orders many times for payments and never had a problem - but I was not aware of the long delay for a claim. I thought (foolishly) that if lost, I could take my receipt and top half of the MO down - have the old one cancelled - and have a new one reissued. Wrong!

I also was under the impression from the PO desk person that certified mail is traceable - wrong again. You can track its progress but not trace its current location.

So - if your sending funds for a gun purchase and you are using POMO's for funding - be aware of all of your delivery options and be very careful of your method of delivery choices, or you could wind up like me - out some cash - no gun - no refund for God only knows how long - and - unless I'm willing or able to fork out additional funds - not going to get the gun I wanted to purchase.

Thanks for all the input guys.

A miracle has occurred - the PO "just found" the letter and delivered it today - what a relief.

Learned a lot this week!

Why not join the SWCA? Most members will accept a personal check from a fellow member. That does away with all of this BS with the USPS. As for me, I prefer bank money orders or preferably cashiers checks. I have never had one questioned or not accepted by my local bank. It is easy to cancel a lost one and there is no waiting period or fee.

They do have advantages, someone tried to scam me with an Ebay purchase a few years ago, a visit by a postal inspector solved the problem in short order, my item arrived in less than 3 days after the visit.
