Anybody up on Ruger 3 screws ?

Most brass grip frames cast by Ruger were either sold as separate parts or installed on blued Old Armys. IF your "Brassy" shipped from Ruger with that grip frame then it is a valuable gun. Ruger guys tend to love .45 Colts, three screw frames and 4 5/8" barrels. Yours MIGHT combine all three with with a scarce grip frame. A few members here are active enough on a Ruger specific forum that they could look yours up by serial number.

I'm sorry that I'm not knowledgeable enough to do that for you. I'm just a Ruger shooter. However I do know that Ruger always cast "MR3DB" in raised letters on their brass grip frames.

There are two Ruger sites you might post this photo on and get more info: Ruger Forum | Ruger Forum for Ruger Guns and Firearms and Ruger Talk - forums, news, articles, reviews, blogs, photos, classifie.

I have a 1971 three screw in 357 magnum. My trigger guard and ejector housing are aluminum...the black finish started wearing off , it looked so bad I stripped them and polished them bright silver . I didn't have the $'s to buy a nice brass one back then , I was young with a wife and kids!
Always thought they looked good ...nice score !

The Super Blackhawk was available with Brass frame as a option
when it first came out in late 50s. Was available in Presentation
case also. Brass frames were available from Ruger and some
after markets. As far as I know, Blackhawks weren't shipped
with SBH grip frames. Guys were always swapping frames and
hammers to customize their pistols. I may be wrong but I think
the brass frame caused some replacement problems for Ruger
on the 44mg SBH and they dropped it from production.

Very, very nice...:) I have seen them on 3 screw Super Blackhawks, using the Supers squared off trigger guard, like yours. Most were offered on Super Blackhawks, but some did make it to the regular Blackhawk line. I attached a link that may help, and yes, real Ruger brass grip frames are worth some $ to collectors.

I attached a couple of paragraphs from Bill Hamm, talking about the brass grip frames -

"Brass “Dragoon” style grip frames with the square back trigger guards for the Super Blackhawk were delivered to Ruger in the Spring of 1964. Supers with brass grip frames, model S47-B, were first offered for sale in the 1966 catalog. Non-prefix serial numbered Supers that will factory letter with a factory installed brass grip frame are very rare and highly sought after by collectors. These grip frames could also be ordered as an accessory for $20. They came with a Super Blackhawk wide serrated trigger to fit in the wide trigger slot found on the brass frames. These brass grip frames could be fitted not only to the Super Blackhawk but the earlier .357 and .44 Blackhawks and the Single-Six as well. The proper size Super Blackhawk grip panels could also be ordered at an additional cost.

These “Dragoon” style brass frames were later offered as an option on other Blackhawk models and the black powder Old Army. On one day only, in early 1968, just over 100 Supers were fitted with a brass grip frame and are found serial numbered in the 33XXX – 36XXX range. A small quantity of the 6-1/2” barreled guns are known to have been fitted with a brass frame. During the last months of 1972, as Old Model production was coming to an end, just over 1500 Super Blackhawks were fitted with brass grip frames. The brass frames were utilized to get rid of existing inventory; the frames would not fit the New Model guns and there would be no market for them later. They were installed on the Supers and, because there was no price differential, the shipping invoice did not indicate a brass grip frame. The bulk of these will not “factory letter” since there was no extra charge noted on the invoice.

Notwithstanding, a new 800 page book has been drafted and is scheduled to be published in 2007 specifically addressing the collecting of classic Ruger tools, pistols and revolvers and, among other things, will list the factory installed brass grip frame Super Blackhawk serial numbers. The book, entitled For WBR is being written by my friend John Dougan, President of the Ruger Collectors Association, collector, researcher and author of several other fine books on Ruger collecting. Through an exhaustive search through factory archives, John has identified the elusive and previously unknown factory installed brass framed Super Blackhawks. I am certainly looking forward to getting my hands on this new book of knowledge."

A few years back, I created my own, in SS. This short barreled Super started out with a regular round trigger grip frame, the only one available in this barrel length. I ordered a Ruger Dragoon style grip frame from the factory, and fit it to the gun. Makes for a nice, one off packin pistol.

I talked with a young lady at Ruger and she
advised the revolver as Oct of 1972. No other
info besides how to get a letter.
This one does have the "MR3DB" markings.

As I was leaving the sales guy advised me to hang a second.
He comes back with a 45acp cylinder. Stated the seller had
it matched up for this gun.

That's a desirable Ruger, brass grip frame or not. The .45 Colt 3 screw Blackhawks with dual cylinders were only in production for a short time prior to the introduction of the New Model Blackhawks. Dougan's book says 3684 were made with the 4 5/8" barrel and dual cylinder option and 3280 in the same length with a single .45 Colt cylinder. He goes on to say 617 OM Blackhawks in both barrel lengths in .45 Colt were assembled with brass grip frames at the end of 1972 but that no convertible models in .45 cal. were shipped with the brass grip frame.
Call Ruger again and ask if the gun shipped as a BKH44 or BKH44X. Those are the factory catalog numbers for a 4 5/8" Blackhawk .45 Colt with single or dual cylinders.
If the records don't show the "X" the .45 ACP cylinder was fitted post-factory. If they show it shipped as a BKH44B, it shipped as shown with the brass grip frame and the cylinder was added later. Either way, nice gun.

I just dropped in the 45acp cylinder
don't think it was ever in the gun.
Lock up timing as new.

Both cylinders are marked with the last
three digits of the serial number.
