I have been going back and forth on deciding to cough up $300 for a CHF 14.5 mid length barrel from DD or FN. I am asking if anyone has changed these 5R barrels out for them and if so what did they experience. Also did they regret it in the long run? Secondly my use for this gun is target, self defense and as well as a rifle that if I had to use it for SHTF type stuff if ever occured. Not saying I believe it will but I would rather have a gun that would be able to take anything and the reassurance I can count on it. If that makes since? Thank you all for your time and responses.

I own a Sport 1 with the 1/8 twist 5R barrel. I traded it for an Armalite AR with the condition, on both parties, to trade back if one of us was not happy. I was not happy!
Keep the 5R barrel on there. Competitive shooters pay a premium price for an 5R barrel, if that helps you out any.
If you want to buy a 2nd AR that's better, IMO, than the current Sport 2, and it has a 1/8 twist barrel, buy the RUGER AR-556.

Thank you for the input. I do know that the 5r is one accurate shooter for sure. I remember when the ruger ar 556 came out it was one hard rifle to get a hold of!

I would keep the 5R barrel there is no reason to swap it out unless you want to shorten the rifle by going 14.5" with a mid-length gas. You will find a lot of people will tell you carbine length for 14.5" and mid-length for 16" but I run midlength on a 14.5" BCM with no issues an believe it recoils ever so slightly less.

A 14.5" even with the pinned brake handles differently than a 16" with a brake/muzzle device. It swings differently and weighs less.

That said IMHO the cost would outweigh the benefits.

VERY good point! I do believe your right. I thought about it over night and think $300 to go towards another AR build for my wife "she wants one bad" would be a better idea and maybe would give me get out of jail free card . with that said boys you persuaded me to not buy one.
