Anyone Ever Chop Down a 625?

Ok, I have a question. I currently have a 625JM and a TR325. I would like a snubbie 25-2 by Jovino, but I realize that isn't going to happen. I am aware of the 325NG and that may happen one day. But I like the idea of a steel snubbie.

So...does anyone ever chop down a 625 to a 3" model or to a true snubbie?

Looking on the net today, it seems some people with 3" N-Frames are quite proud of them. Which is fine. And I look at Model 25s and it's the same thing. Or they are so mint it would be a shame for me to buy it. :)

So....does anyone ever take a 625 and chop on it? If you have, I would love to see some pics. I would even like some suggestions on shops who do this type of work?

Oh...and if someone has a Jovino Effector in 45 they want to sell me, I'm open to that as well. Hahahaha!

And for the record, my longterm to do list is to get a 1917 that is beat to death and chop that down to almost-Fitz as well. I say almost since I am not too hip on the open trigger-guard.

P.S. My first post on a revolver forum.

Welcome to the forum, Greyson. You came aboard with a great question. Cylinder & Slide may be able to do that work. Their reputation is good........

FYI-You can't cut a longer barrel to 2 1/2" because of the ejector rod.
You need new parts for that.

SDM cuts barrels to 4"; don't know about to 3". $250.

I found my three inch 625-3 not too long ago for just over $500. They are out there. Times are making people sell guns they otherwise wouldn't. I figured that gun needed a good home and adopted it right away. I have even paid for all its shots since then...

Why would you want to cut the barrel back instead of removing it and installing a new, shorter one? It seems like that would be less costly. Or, are factory barrels uncommon and prohibitively expensive?

I'm not trying to "be smart" here. I am trying to "get smart".

I was talking to them at SHOT but at the time, I didn't even think to look at their revolver work. I was on their site yesterday. It seems their wait times have come down.

Hmmm...SDM. Heard of them but didn't think of them with revolvers. We are actually in the same state so that helps a bit with getting it to and from.

As for cutting it down...you are correct. I know some parts will be in play. I was using it as a general term but that in know way is to infer I understand anything about revolvers! :)

I know my 325TR has a short ejector-rod.

Good point. I wasn't sure myself. I was looking at my 625 last night and the ejector rod. I was thinking some off the front, some off the back. But then I am forgetting about the barrel threads.

What was the shortest Jovino cut down a 45 to?

Just as an exercise, could one purchase a 325 Night Guard barrel after / second market? Don't know I want it that short, but I want to see what my options are.

Just thinking out loud which is always dangerous.

There are a couple of 625s forsale I have seen with 3" barrels. One is about 1000 and the other is 1300. I don't have a problem with the prices as a point of cost. I understand a Jovino is not going to be cheap. These aren't Jovinos first of all. But I don't think 1300 for a revolver that is still longer than what I am ideally wanting isn't efficient.

Has anyone made steel 625 / 25 snubbies on their own?

I believe Jovino got them down to 3" without shortening the ejector rod.

I bought a 3" m25 barrel from gunparts co., sent my m25 with a bad 6" barrel and the new barrel to S&W for a proper fitting and refinish in nickle. The gun isn't finished yet but when I get it I will post pictures.
PS, the price for the barrel was $100. I'm going to order more before the run out.

Sounds like a nice revolver. I would be interested in seeing pics when you get it back. What is your expected delivery date?

Welcome to the Forum

These days there are factory big bore snubbies. . . back in the 70s and 80s N-frame snubbies did not exist so Jovino, Belhert and others steeped up to the place and gave the public what it was craving.

Here is my Belhert. It has a 2 3/8" barrel. Custom snubbies of the day were between 2 5/8" and 2 3/8".

Today you can buy Night Guards with their 2 1/2" barrels.

Then there are the 2" barreled N-frames. Here is an 8 shot 357 Magnum

327-2s.jpg

In 45 S&W offered these in 45ACP or 45 Long Colt like the pair below.

I like the 45 snubbies so much that I grabbed 4 extra barrels so that I could build a few with adjustable sights.

I also grabbed a 3" for a future project. I wish I could have gotten more than one of these as well.

Then there are the snubby made by other manufacturers. Here is a Astra Terminator

term-rs.jpg

Taurus has/had an entire lineup of 5 shot big bore. These are about L-frame size.

With all of that going on it is far more practical to buy one than have a gunsmith cut one down for you. However if money is no option and you really want what you want, you can have anything made.

The Astra was made in 45ACP?

I also can't seem to find a Taurus 455 or Jovino. How difficult is it to find a Belhert 2 3/8 barrel? I am liking barrels under 3.

I was told 16 weeks and I can't remember when I sent it in. It'll show up one day and be a complete surprise. I'm also waiting for two Pythons to come back from the factory, arrival date also unknown. It'll be a nice fall this year.
