Anyone familiar with the Walther PPS?

I got to shoot a PPK way back in the day and loved it. Right now Walther has a rebate going on and it's $100 for the PPS. I was just wondering if anyone here had an experience with them and what they thought.

Just personal whim, I couldn't see buying the PPK way back when and bought a SIG 230 with a better trigger. Couldn't see buying the first version of the PPS with heavy trigger and soon the Shield came out and it has a better trigger than the PPS (first version). I'm told the PPS M2 is redesigned with a decent trigger and a "US normal" mag release. So it might be almost as good ergonomically as the Shield, for more money....? YMMV

I had the same thoughts, but I was just doing my due diligence, LOL. One thing is that I absolutely love my Bodyguard 380, even though some folks have said they detested them and had issues with them, mine has been steady and functioning perfectly since I bought it. Since then I have put hundreds of rounds through it without a single malfunction. So, in that light why switch brands? I just wondered about the Walther from a curiosity factor.

(Side note, I see you're former USAF too, what did you do and how long ago was it? Just wondering if you and I were at San Antonio around the same time. I'm guessing I'm at least a little bit, if not a lot older than you. I joined when I was 17, way back in 1976, LOL! Wow, now that's coincidental! I studied Physics too and taught it to gifted high school students for an educational research foundation back in the early 1990s. The I moved on and became a CCIE, Cisco Certified Internet Engineer. I actually helped to design and build the real Internet, I mean the data circuits from Iowa State to Harvard, way back in 1991, LOL! Man, now it's really getting a little weird, I ran the Internet access for all of Illinois' academia including U of Ill, especially UIUC. I worked for CICNet ... small world)

I had the Walther PPS M2 and it was just OK. Trigger was better than the Glock 43 but nowhere near as awesome as the PPQ. I ended up selling it because I didn't like the fact it only held 6 rounds.

So you have the PPQ? Not sure what S&W's you may have but ...

... do you like the PPQ as much as any of the S&W's?

I have handled both the first and second gen PPS's extensively. I keep a gen 1 PPS (M1) in 9mm. I like the gun allot . I think the features and ergonomics are better than the Shield 9 ( which I sold off.) . The interchangeable grip back straps and squared trigger guard make it shoot like a much bigger gun for me. Reliability is fantastic too. I think it's a great (and often overlooked ) option in a single stack, mid caliber carry gun.
That said, I used to carry it fairly frequently but have now somewhat replaced it with my PC shield 45. I still keep it for range fun though.

Shooting down a helicopter that escapes, I take my model 29 for that rather.

Had a Shield but didn't love it, even after the Apex trigger. Then tried out the PPS and liked it a bunch more so I sold the Shield and got the PPS.

But I also had a full-sized Walther P99AS (having sold my S&W 99 as the Walther was better).

I like it so much I tried the P99cAS and WINNER!!. About the same size as the PPS (a bit thicker, but it holds 10 rounds and my 15 round P99 mags fit as well) and if ya wanna buy my PPS it'll soon be on the market.

Give the 99c AS a try. DA/SA with decocker, 15 round mags fit, much better trigger than on the PPS, and I can carry it in my jeans pocket. As much as I liked my S&Ws....the 99c is a big step up from the Shield or PPS....and I didn't need to have any trigger work or aftermarket parts installed to make it shootable like I had to on the Shield.

WW2 Walther bring back

When I was a kid one of my neighbors had a WW2 bring back in .32. If it was dry fired it would break and launch the firing pin. His son was showing it to me while mom and dad were at work, dry fired it and broke the firing pin. If memory serves, my friend had trouble sitting for a week.

My favorite is my Walther PPQA.
Fits my hand perfectly.
The trigger is around 4#, and no mal-functions.
I can empty a magazine quickly on target and re-load quickly without looking at the pistol.

My wife picked out the M2 with the laser. She really likes it so far. The only problem we have encountered is the flush magazine locking back with a round left. This seems to be a fairly common experience with the flush magazine...at least according to the internet. Its not a big deal for us because she only uses the extended magazines so she can get a full grip.

I have shot it some. It's a few ounces heavier than a Shield and seems to have a little less felt recoil because of it. I'm generally not a fan of striker fired triggers but this one is pretty good. The grip is a very good fit for my hand and makes it a comfortable shooter. I can't say anything negative about it other than it's a little big in size for the capacity if you compare it to the Shield or LC9s or Glock 43.

I'm generally not a fan of striker fired triggers but this one is pretty good. The grip is a very good fit for my hand and makes it a comfortable shooter. I can't say anything negative about it other than it's a little big in size for the capacity if you compare it to the Shield or LC9s or Glock 43.

I had the M1 for a short period and felt the same way. That predated the Glock 43, whose trigger is comparable IMO. With the PPQ and the PPS, Walther has the best pair of striker fired pistols on the market, in my opinion.

My primary carry gun for years was a PPS M1. Bought it when they first came out. I chose it because I shot it better than any other single stack 9mm available. I shot the slim little PPS as well as a much bigger Gun. The only other pistol I carry now is my PPQ M2, which I shoot even better! The M&P is a great gun. Choose whichever one you prefer.

Another PPS M1 Fan here. Mines been flawless, shoots like a bigger gun, very accurate, and the ambidextrous paddle release is ideal for a single stack compact 9mm.

Also own the first version. Very accurate, good trigger (better than glock imo) and slim for concealing. With the right mag, just large enough to get all your fingers on. Easy to shoot accurately, but changed the front sight due to the sights being European style (cover your target). The stepped chamber may help the accuracy potential. Had to send it back due to trigger group failure, a common problem on the earlier versions.

Currently carry a 45, but kept the pps for future.

I have a PPS40 Classic that I use as my warm weather EDC. It is a bit snappy but it is a fine shooter. I like and trust the PPS! The PPS conceals well even when wearing shorts and a T-shirt. My cold weather EDC is an SW908 because it is easier to dig out from layers of clothes. I also own several other heavier weighing Gen 2 and 3 Smith semi-autos and a PPQ 9mm Classic in Tungsten Grey which are fun guns and conversation starters at the range. The PPQ is used mostly by my daughter but she does let me run at least one mag when we go to the range together.

I've had two of the first model PPS. Thought that they were both great. Reliable. Slim and concealable. Nearly perfect for their intended purpose. It's funny...the first one that I bought was really expensive. At the time, it was really the slimmest single stack 9mm out there. Ruger came out with the LC9 and LCP, Smith had the Shield, and so on. New prices dropped a lot. In fact, I think my first was imported by Smith & Wesson. Anyway, great little guns. Prefer revolvers...but the first model PPS will always get two thumbs up from me. Never tried the second version.
