Anyone had the seasonal crud longer than usual?

My childhood asthma returned ten years ago the end of this summer, after a virile infection of my pericardium - flu - in a bad place. Add that to being allergic to many things, including cats and cigarette smoke, and I have had some miserable pollen seasons - this one tops them. I know the seven indoor-only cats are problematic - but chlortabs take care of them - usually. I'm just glad they don't smoke!

I've tried the usual home remedies - and otc goodies, like Mucinex, but I really am pretty clear except for the cough - and throat clearing. My wife has the same symptoms. A day in the yard makes it far worse - A/C helps. The allergies - even red eyes - peak in the yard. I know the pollen is really bad this year - have others had problems? Maybe I am allergic to yard work? Of course, both ranges I use are 'outdoors'...

My same aged (I'll be 62 this summer.) and older friends who visited their doc's with the same symptoms generally got an expectorant, antihistamine, decongestant, and some, an antibiotic. Most got the ubiquitous steroid shot. One claimed that 'knocked it out' - several insisted it all helped - until it recurred days later. It is persistent. One fellow insists his never left from last fall. Another longterm sufferer said he finally wore it out - so there is hope.

I'm tired of wounds, infections, and sinus-crud taking longer to improve/shake as you age. There out to be a law....

The pollen this year was at never before seen levels. I know that the news said that in the southern states there were levels in the 5k's where the previous max had been in the high 1k's. I know that my household has been living on antihistamines it seems like.
 
My immune system seems to be at an all time low, even though I take vitamins and exercise regularly. I'm dealing with a cold right now and just shook a strep infection a few weeks ago, with the help of antibiotics. You might try using a dust mask when doing yard work. Getting old ain't for sissies!
 
I've done better this year than usual. I tried Zyrtec, and it seems to work. Eye's still water a little, but very little sneezing and no congestion. I found at Sam's club the generic equivalent at $17.00 for 375 pills. A years supply. Pharmacist confirmed it is exactly the same "except the price".

You folks might try an over the counter spray called Nasalcrom.
It works on allergies to pet dander, pollen, dust etc.
There are also drops for cats that make them less likely to trigger allergies in humans. We get them from the vet so my wife can have a cat.
 
My wife and I had the crud for four weeks each. Couldn't shake it, and we tried nearly everything. Age seems to make it worse.
 
Been taking Claratin for so long I must have built up an immunity to it because it doesn't seem to work like it used to, but the bottom line is as long as you are still on this side of the grass there is no sense complaining.
 
Don't take any lingering ailment for granted. Last year my friend Jerry along with several others got the creepin crud while working the San diego Boat Show. Everybody but Jerry eventually got better after several weeks. He finally went back to the doctor who was concerned with his oxygen levels being low and suggested he come back in a day or two if he wasn't feeling better. He died that night in his sleep of a heart attack that was probably induced by the low oxygen level. Had he sought follow up treatment sooner he might still be with us. I sure miss him.

Thanks for the tip. I just got some and it seems to be working already.

I'm 50 and never had allergies before, but I've been miserable this year. I can go out in the morning and sweep the pollen off my car.
 
If this stuff drags on for too long go get checked out, a friend that I worked with for almost 40 years fought the flu all fall and half way through the winter, sick, just the flu, his daughter got him to go to the doctor and a week later he died, had cancer. Dont take any chances. Jeff
 
I have also had success with NasalCrom. In the past, I was prescribed Rhinocort and it helped too. Being OTC, the NasalCrom is easier to get.

I had the same experience with Asthma. I seemed to outgrow it in my early 20's. In my late 50's I developed a bad respiratory infection. Since that time I do get asthma with the right triggers such as cigarette smoke, other types of smoke such as burning leaves, strong chemical odors, and some perfumes. I keep a Xopenex inhaler to treat it when it occurs.

Don't take this lightly! I have a theory. There seems to be something going around the country and it seems to be harder on those who have other problems. It doesn't make one feel "sick" per se, it just won't go away and can set up in the lungs causing breathing problems.
My wife and I both had it. I normally don't get sick/get well quickly. It took me a month to kick it. I never felt sick (no fever/usual cold symptoms), just unusually "snotty". After two months my wife finally went to the doctor. She also didn't feel "sick" but couldn't get a "good breath". The doc gave her a breathing treatment, an inhaler, and antibiotics, which are helping. She doesn't suffer from allergies, nor do I. The doc also said that "it" was on the verge of turning into pneumonia in my wife's case.
The "usual suspects" (allergies/hay fever/pollen count) seem to mask this thing and make people dismiss it as something else. Don't be fooled! If you have allergies, they may be making this "stuff" worse, but it's not JUST your allergies/hay fever. Go to the doctor and get checked if you can't shake it after a few weeks. What can it hurt to get checked out?
You may think I'm nuts but I believe that something is going around and it's not being run down by the docs because it isn't something that acts quickly on people or can be easily diagnosed (like the flu). My son came in to visit from Maryland and he had the same symptoms (not sick just "snotty" and coughing, took forever to kick it). Whatever "this" is, it's not local and it's more than hay fever.
OK, I'm done. You can call me Mr. tinfoil hat now!!
