Anyone have a gun rust in your pocket?

Brand new 442 Pro comes out of my pocket with a rusted cylinder and thumb latch...S&W did the right thing...less than 2 weeks to get back. Anyone else trouble with rust? The cylinder crane now has a new number on it ...518...anyone have a thought what that number is for? I think that maybe my gun, NIB, had a mistaken carbon cylinder on it and they switched it out for a stainless...442 Pro is supposed to have a stainless...I don't know..

A few questions. Was the original cylinder stainless (silver) or blued? How long was the gun in your pocket before the rust formed? Was the gun exposed to conditions where you'd expect it to rust (wet, salt water)? Was it in a holster and the outside oiled or wiped down regularly?

Regarding the yoke (crane) number, if you are certain it is the original part the number is likely an inspection stamp.

Is this the 442 Pro Series Moon Clip? If so, it is supposed to have a stainless steel cylinder. My 442 with a blued carbon steel cylinder has spent many hours in my pocket and it hasn't shown any signs of corrosion. Some holster wear but no corrosion.

Idk but I carry a Little Blued Ruger LCP literally in my pocket it gets lots of lint but no rust and I been carrying it this way for over 2 years without any problems it also has only been cleaned good 1 time in that 2 years after I shot it, I blow the lint out once a month with air compressor that's it... Believe me I have literally sweat all over this thing too while riding my bike in hot humid weather lol lol

I had a Kahr K9 that rusted on every outing. I sweat a lot while hiking and he entire slide would have a light orange coating when it came out of the holster for cleaning at the end of every trip. I oil and maintain my weapons well. That gun just was rust prone. My other blued guns have never done that.

I have this problem with a 442 also. I used to carry a Glock 26 IWB, in a Comp-Tac MTAC leather/kydex holster. I never gave a thought to wiping it down every day, but I did shoot it regularly, both in practice sessions and in two matches a month, and would usually clean it after those sessions. Never had a rust issue, as I would expect given their metal finishing process.

When I switched to carrying a 442, I also carried IWB in a leather/kydex holster from Kholster (Comp-Tac doesn't do revolver holsters in their MTAC line), and like the Glock I just wore it and ignored it for the first week or two. When I did happen to check it there were spots of rust on the crane, but not on the cylinder or the latch button. Now I check it at the end of every day and wipe down the crane and cylinder with a silicone cloth. I frequently find little beads of moisture in the frame/crane seam when I swing the cylinder out. But since I wipe 'em away every day it doesn't seem to cause any more rust.

I don't carry in a pocket, and don't know if an OWB holster would reduce the buildup of moisture between frame and crane. If I had it to do over I'd have gotten the 642 and just painted the sights black (the main reason I chose the 442.)

Ive carried my 442 in an ankle holster for two years. The only corrosion on it ive seen is the grip screw. Rusted pretty good.

I once jumped into Boston Harbor, when I got out I put my hand in my pocket and the only thing left of the gun was the grips. Sorry couldn't resist.

442 Pro is blued....second time it rusted. I've had the gun 3 months. A few weeks in, I took it out of my pocket and the side of the cylinder against my leg was rusted as was the cylinder latch. Sent it to S&W with a note...they called that they rec'vd it and I spoke about it with the rep a few minutes...got it back and a week later...rust again. This time on the back edge of the cylinder where you load and a little on the side of the cylinder. Thumb latch also rusted. I sent another email to S&W and am waiting for another FED EX number to ship it off again...I'm surprised because it's supposed to be a Stainless Cylinder coated blue...but my 686 never rusted...my stainless Bobcat never rusted...sad. Hope it get's fixed right and I don't have to keep sending it back. I remove it at night, look it over and give it a wipe...not every time but, you know...it's dry. Took it out and ...hello...rust that raised the surface finish...

May I ask what kind of pocket holster...?

Renaissance wax. Why? The same reason folks wax their cars. It's a very effective protectant. A $30 jar will last a lifetime.

No surface of that gun should be rusting. If you are indeed seeing oxidized metal on the surface, then the coating is insufficient.

It's just that simple.

Remember when the cars coming out of detroit used to rust apart in 2 or 3 years - you know - all the way through and chunks of them used to fall off on the highway? Yea, that's because they didn't paint, or otherwise coat, the metal properly. It's just that simple.

Just to clarify...and I confirmed it with S&W....Pro 442, cut for moonclips, come standard, or should come standard, with a stainless cylinder...Tech at S&W replied to an email that my sweat is too acidic...anyone?

Yep,some guys have lethal sweat.Try the wax and see if it works.
