I have a friend who like alot of people is scrambling to buy an ar-15. To make it worse he wants a left handed ar-15 which are impossible to find.

So Ive told him to just get a regular right handed one while he still can and worry about finding a lefty upper later.

So he needs a brass deflector to use. I looked around a bit a few months ago for one but came up fairly empty. Anybody have any idea on where to find a brass deflector?

I tried one from midway that was supposed to fit on top rail but I could never get it to sit right so I could put optics on.

I dont know about the deflector but as far as a left hand sporting rifle, it is easier to get a left hand upper receiver and BCG than it is to get a left hand rifle.

Something I had not previously known - the built in case defelector on the upper was not an original feature of the M16. The deflector was added later (1980 something?) for left handed shooters. One thing you can try is a different buffer weight to get the case deflected more to the front and away from your left handed partner.

I know the deflector on my Sport works as I can see the brass markings on it. Still would be disconcerting to have them deflecting inches away from my nose if I were a lefty.

Bill,

That would certainly make me anxious too, another good reason to wear eye protection. Just curious, does anyone know if the military issues left handed AR's?

I never saw one, I asked the nephew (marine corps armorer) he says nope!

I don't think I'd be any good at all if I was forced to shoot off hand. As far as a brass deflector.. I'd probably go DIY route. I remember seeing a few posts about how to make them. Some use an angled railed block on the closest rail on the ejection side, then attach a piece of plastic or metal to it over the eject. edit.. hey what do ya know.. there's links at the bottom of this page. lol

Back in the day when the "Mattel" showed up on the range as an issued weapon... Most of the lefty shooter's mounted (taped) a small block of wood just behind the ejection port to deflect the hot cases more forward. Some added a thin metal strap to the wood and pinched the ends between the upper and lower to hold it in place. Some just buttoned their top shirt button and blasted away, others just switched and shot right handed. No select fire back then either. So even a short burst would put a lot of hot cases in your shirt.

How about a shell catcher ? I can't recall where I saw them or how it attached , but it was a mesh bag over the ejection port. Not sure if this would help left handed shooters. I think it was more for saving brass.

I just ordered s brass catcher and will soon start reloading my own.

Over all the years,I never found one that worked worth a ****. Either clogged up from weight, caused jams and some (mesh) even melted from the hot brass.
