I have access to one, but have not heard any positive or negatives except that when they were first released there were mag issues that have since been resolved.

Thanks

Do you mean 5.65mm NATO?

The M&P comes in several varieties but 5.45 I don't think is one of them, but I have a M&P15 Sport that is chambered in 5.65/45mm NATO and will also shoot .223 Remington! I do quite well with it and I am a pistol shooter!

Have you searched this forum. There are quite a few threads about the rifle. The plus side is the ammo is about half the price of .223. The negative side is the ammo is corrosive so you have to be punctual about cleaning it the afternoon or evening of shooting. I use straight Ballistol. I give it an average cleaning about the same as any other AR owner would do. I have never seen a spec of corrosion. Just like an AK be careful about cleaning areas where the oil gets burnt off. Like the flash hider. Mine is capable of 2" groups at 100 w/ surplus USSR ammo.

Love it. Inexpensive and steel-core nastiness. Corrosive, yes. I carry soapy water makings and just douse the entire gun - the AK-74 and AR get the same treatment and I get plenty of funny looks from others at the range. Then just clean as normal with Hoppes or your favorite CLP.

Two thumbs up for 5.45x39.

Thanks, for the feedback. If I get it I will not use the surplus. I've used the Wolf and Silver Bear, in AK's before, and it's still about 30% less compared to the 5.56.

Buy a can and do your own test. Most of the 5.45 AR and AK74 shooters I know like the surplus with the lighter bullet better. Perhaps it has something to do with barrel twist. You're going to clean it after a range trip anyway aren't you?

A bore snake is cleaning.:D Corrosive ammo requires a detail strip.

Ok, so first off .. why would smith&wesson discontinue this rifle?? It obviously was a great choice for them to make because a lot of use like to shoot and I myself do not believe in 22lr for training purposes because there is no punch to it, there is no loud boom to it, so to me simulating training would have to be with a centerfire cartridge (like this Russian one) .. it's cheaper than the .223 (5.56nato) and it's ballistics are just about the same 5.45x39mm= 2,900 ft/s & 1,034 ft·lbf out of a 55.9gr projectile and the 5.56nato 55gr with a nosler ballistic tip goes about 3,240 ft/s & 1,282 ft·lbf so as you can see if you truly want to simulate the feel of AR-15/M16/M4 Platform i dont think the .22lr is the way to go at all.. this 5.45X39mm is by and large the best choice due to similar ballistics, similar weight, similar BANG, and similar capacity.. That's just my .02 penny's
