Arthritis is getting a bit worse in the knee and the Doc recommended Voltaran. After reading the instructions and warnings, I'm not so sure.

Anyone have real time experience, and does it work?

Yes it works! My wife and I use it, and joke about it being “magic gel” because it works so well. She’s a pharmacist, so if there are any bad side effects she would know, and know how serious they are. I’ve never heard her say a word about it.

Yep, use it occasionally on my lower back. Works well. Just so happens my GF is also a pharmacist, who thinks it’s the best topical treatment on the market for muscle and joint pain. Never heard her or anyone else mention anything about side effects.

Was Voltaren once a oral
Medication?
I think I was prescribed (Rx) that once for my shoulder.
It worked ridiculously well.

I’m a regular user of Voltaren. The 1% over the counter version is good, but the 2.3% available in Mexico is great. When we travel to Mexico we usually buy 4-6 tubes of the 2.3% stuff. Also, it’s much cheaper there. I use it on my shoulder and hands and it keeps me going without any whining! The oral version is hard on the organs.

...It has a reputation of being hard on the liver.

Not quite. Its active ingredient is diclofenac, an NSAID (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drug) that can be hard on the kidneys if taken in too large a dose or over an extended period of time.

I took diclofenac orally for years, and it damaged my kidneys. However, my doc says the topical Voltaren gel acts more locally rather than systemically and is OK for me to use a few days at a time. My xrays say I've needed a knee replacement for years, but I've found Voltaren applied twice a day for 3-5 days makes the pain go away, and then I'm good for months without another dose.
My doc says to keep it up rather than undergo the major surgery and rehab entailed by a total knee replacement.

If you use it often, check creatinine and eGFR once or twice a year to be sure your kidneys are doing OK, and do not take any other NSAIDs with it other than an 81mg baby aspirin for your heart.

My neck doctor gave me Diclofenac Sodium, which is Voltaren in pill form. It worked about 10 days, then quit. Nothing works on my pain like Oxycodone. I thought the diclofenac was gonna be the answer, but it's worthless now for me.

I use it as needed. Definitely works as a topical relief. But was told not to take NSAID over the counter pain meds when using it.

I use Arnicare gel on my lower back. That seems to be about the best OTC stuff that works for me. In gel form it kinda soaks in and isn't all slimy. It works on my knees, too. I've tried them all, and Arnicare Gel seems to work best for me when my pain meds are getting low in the bottle. And, NO, you won't find me standing up on Bigelow Blvd. with a cardboard sign anytime soon!

Edit: I never heard of Burdok root, but i'll try anything.
