Anyone want to share some love for the M&P 1.0?

Several years ago during the first big ammo crunch I could not find any 9mm ammo, or any of the other popular calibers that I owned hand guns in, on the shelves in my area. However, .40S&W could be found on otherwise empty shelves every where I went.

So I did the logical thing and went shopping for .40 to add to my collection. I found a good deal on an M&P police trade in (This was long before the 2.0 came out of-course) that looked brand new and jumped on it.

At the time I had no experience with the M&P or any striker fired gun, but felt the need for a .40 caliber pistol and this one fit the bill. I had no preconceived opinion, good or bad, about the M&P. So I just took a chance on it based on S&W reputation and track record.

Turns out I really liked the gun (for the most part, I'll get to that later) and it is still in my collection and I still take it to the range.

At some point, when 9mm became plentiful again, I picked up a Storm Lake 9mm drop in barrel for it, making range sessions more economical.
I love the way the gun fits in my hand and points naturally for me. It came equipped with the basic 3 dot sites which were adequate up until my eye site began to decline with age over the past couple of years. I like the simplicity of the field stripping process. The only real downside to the 1.0 for me is it's awful, long, spongy, gritty trigger pull and mile long reset.

I have not purchased any new guns in a while and figured it was about time that I exercise my 2A rights once again and started looking around. After the initial trauma of the cost of a new CZ75b subsided I got to thinking "I have a perfectly good gun in that S&W if it were not for the crappy trigger, and possibly some brighter sites to better accommodate my old eyes." So I set out to find fixes for these issues.

After a bit of 'interweb' research I have ordering a McCarbo trigger upgrade kit, an Apex Action Enhancement Trigger and a set of Truglow fiber optic sites. I also studied several videos on how to polish the various internal components to smooth out the trigger pull.

I have already received the McCarbo spring kit and am awaiting the rest of the parts to arrive before doing the trigger job. If all goes well, and all the components and action polishing job live up to the hype and users reviews I should be shooting what is essentially a brand new gun. We shall see. I will follow up with a report here once the parts are in, the work is completed and I've had a chance to take it to the range.

p.s.; I prefer the extended beaver tail on the 1.0 over the flat back of the 2.0. I guess if it were a compact pistol that I intended to carry concealed I might be concerned about the added length of the tail, but would much rather have the beaver tail on a full sized pistol intended for range and home defense.

p.p.s; I'ld love to hear from anyone else who has a love for the old 1.0 and what mods you have made to them, and what your experiences with the 1.0 have been.

I have what came to be called a 1.0 M&P, and still have it after shooting 20K+ rounds in IDPA and USPSA Production. It has a 4#, smooth trigger, and a fiber optic front sight. The rear sight is flat black, as I prefer it. The barrel is 5".

The gun came FACTORY STOCK with these features as the 9mm PRO MODEL. Internal polishing is allowed in IDPA and USPSA Production Divisions. There are NO aftermarket parts in the pistol.

Part failures were minimal: fiber optic rod, trigger spring and striker. The ISMI recoil assembly never failed. I carried spare parts and a spare gun (another M&P that I never used in a Level II or higher match).

I actually prefer the 1.0 pistols, the grip texture on the 2.0 makes my hand raw. I carry a .40 Shield daily and have a fullsize .40 that is a pretty good shooter, the fullsize has an Apex forward set trigger in it. The Shield has a really nice factory trigger in it that is a good choice for a carry weapon. I don't do mods to any weapon I use for carry. The 1.0 just feels right in my hand.

I've had a Shield 1.0 as my carry pistol for years. Love it! Has never given me a problem and eats everything I feed it. Accurate and feels just right for my hands. Carry a spare mag and don't feel the need for anything more. No mods needed for me, I like it as is. I keep trying to justify a new CCP but can't as long as I have my Shield 1.0. It's a keeper.

All of my M&Ps are 1.0.

Bought my Fullsize and Compact (in 2.0 speak, now the Subcompact back) in 2013, my Shield in 2014.

Fullsize wears a 5" ported CORE slide and RMR. Both full and compact have 2.0 triggers. Shield is stock.

I also have a 5" non-ported Storm Lake barrel.

My first M&P was an original, 1.0 if you will, and while it was very good, at the time the grass was greener elsewhere. Here we are a few years down the road with 2.0's and PC's, but my EDC is a great little Shield 9 1.0. The trigger is better than anything I've seen for a while, with only a little polishing inside, it has a solid wall and breaks like a glass rod. The MCarbo kit should serve you well, though Apex is top of the heap. That 1.0 should continue to serve you well for many years to come.

I have the original Shield 1.0 with a seven on trigger. Put over 2500 rounds through it with out any issues. This little handgun served me well for a few years of EDC. It now sits in the safe but every once I a while I dry fire it and might take it to the range. The only thing I don’t like is the slick grip and that is with talon grips on it. The 2.0 grips are so much better.

The Shield plus has replaced the 1.0 but rarely carry it as I would rather carry my compact or metal.

I still have my S&W M&P 40 Compact, set up with Viridian light, Crimson Trace Laser Grips, and 15 round extended magazine.

One hundred percent stock and unmodified, it is just about the perfect nightstand home defense gun.

With the 15 round extended magazine it feels like a full size pistol in the hand and supplies plenty of firepower if ever needed.

My first M&P pistol was a police trade-in full size M&P 45. It came with a standard barrel, threaded barrel, and 4 SS magazines. My son manages several local gun stores and he gave me a great price on this M&P, and in return I gave him the threaded barrel for his M&P 45 since I had no plans to install a suppressor on mine. This pistol had great fit and finish, and was an excellent and dependable shooter. However, I didn't shoot it very much, and last summer ended up trading it in for a new M&P 10mm 2.0 (4.6"). I was fortune to buy one of the 10mm without any issues, and am extremely happy with it. I do miss that M&P 45, though!

The most economical way to improve the M1.0 trigger is to install a competition sear block. You can get them on eBay. I stay away from the MCarbo stuff. Light springs can cause function and reliability issues.

I've got a M&P Pro that has been a great pistol, accurate, reliable, and fits my hand really well. I did drop in an Apex trigger shortly after I bought it. She's a keeper! :)

Due to training commitments and practice I easily have put more rounds through my FS M & P 9 1.0 than any other gun I’ve used. Accurate and no mechanical issues. My only observation is the grip texture on the 1.0 is a little too smooth and the 2.0 too rough. Just a little whining. :)

I still have my first gen M&P9c nd M&P45c. I have to admit I haven't shot either one in some time. Usually my range time lately has been relearning to shoot double action revolvers, specifically my new Python and Anaconda. When I do break out a 9mm, its my Shield +, because that is my carry gun these days.

You, Sir are allowed to whine once in a while. Try the Talon Pro grip on that 1.0. It has the grip of the 2.0's while not being painfully aggressive.

I inherited this Shield 9. It came with Two 8 round mags and One 7. It carries easy and shoots just fine. When my back gets tired of carrying my XDM 3.8 Springfield, the Shield gets the call.

Two FS M&P 1.0 40s, one a PC C.O.R.E., the other a regular 4.25" with an extra 2.0 5" 9mm slide and barrel... Also a 1.0 40 Compact.3.6".

9mm conversion & 357 SIG barrels for all three.

The PC's trigger was just great from the get-go. I have an AGENCY/APEX trigger kit but can't bring myself to install it in either of the other two because I like their factory triggers right out of the box.:D

Bought some 9mm magazines in both compact & FS. Have a CT Laser that came with the 2nd FS that will fit on all three. A Vortex red dot on the C.O.R.E.

I guess you could opine that I'm decidedly involved with M&P 1.0s: only thing to be extra careful about is insuring the right barrel, the right magazine & the right ammo is in place before pulling any triggers...

Cheers!

How do you like the polymer trigger? Have you ever had any issues with it binding up if your finger is not square on the trigger face?

I have three of the first generation M&P's. Two of them are full size Pro Series models. One is chambered for 9mm and has the 5" barrel. The other a .40 caliber with a 4.25" barrel. The third is a .40 caliber Shield.

The 9mm is bone stock with a really good trigger. It breaks nicely at between 4.5 and 5 lbs with my trigger gauge. It still has the long take up but, being a revolver guy, I'm used to it. The gun has my favorite sight picture, with a green fiber optic front and a blacked out rear. This thing is a tack driver.

On the .40 caliber I replaced the trigger with the Apex FSS Trigger kit several years ago. The trigger is about as close to a 1911 trigger as you can get in a striker fired pistol I guess. The trigger pull is short, crisp and measures about 4lbs. It has the Novak night sights that have lost their brightness now. I love this gun and carried it until I got the Shield.

I've just recently begun to carry my Shield again after several years. It has TruGlo night sights and a dark gray slide. The trigger is stock and broken in nicely and measures right around 4lbs after some polishing in the usual places.

Even though I sometimes play with the idea of getting a new M&P of some variety or the other, I always seem to come back around to the idea that these three do everything I need them too. I still love all of them.!
